Kyffhäuserland offers several distinct points of interest for culture and landscape enthusiasts: architectural history in Bendeleben, the landscaped park at the old castle, and distinctive natural features. When choosing a focus for your stay, it helps to distinguish between these attractions. The range extends from a historic church portal to an English-style park with Baroque elements, as well as limestone flora and an anhydrite cave.

Architectural history and park design in Bendeleben

The village church of St. Pankratius in Bendeleben was rebuilt in 1588 under the patronage of Hermann von Bendeleben. The weathered masonry of the southern entrance portal dates back at least to the 12th century, in the Old Romanesque style. The building therefore brings together two distinct periods: the 16th-century reconstruction and the much older portal. This gives architecture enthusiasts a tangible way to explore the relationship between church architecture and its portal.

The 21-hectare castle park surrounds the old castle in Bendeleben. It was laid out in the English style with Baroque elements. The spring area and tree cover were used to create winding paths and sightlines. The grounds can therefore be understood both through their stylistic elements and through the way they make use of the natural setting. Their size and design offer different ways to appreciate the park: as an expansive landscape and as a deliberately composed sequence of paths and views.

Filsberg and the Barbarossa Cave

Filsberg, which rises in the eastern part of the Hainleite, towers 136 metres above the valley floor. Rare limestone flora grows on Filsberg in Hachelbich. Its elevation above the plain and its plant life are two distinct natural features. The Barbarossa Cave offers a different geological highlight: it is an anhydrite cave between the districts of Rottleben and Steinthaleben. The local attractions are clearly distinct: the setting and flora of Filsberg on the one hand, and the rock type and location of the cave between two districts on the other.

In the wider Kyffhäuserkreis destination, the history of the Barbarossa Cave goes back to 1865, when five miners discovered it in connection with the resumption of copper shale mining. It was named after the legend of Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa’s return. The story of its discovery and the legend behind its name add a historical and narrative dimension to the geological perspective.

More things to explore in Kyffhäuserkreis

The Sondershausen Adventure Mine is also part of the wider Kyffhäuserkreis destination. Guided tours are available there year-round at a depth of 670 metres, including an approximately two-hour truck tour through the underground labyrinth. The mine is also home to the world’s deepest concert hall, where concerts and cabaret performances are held regularly. The tours and events offer different ways to visit: a tour through the mine or an evening of concert or cabaret.

For hiking enthusiasts, the Kyffhäuser Trail is another regional option. This 37-kilometre circular route starts and ends in Bad Frankenhausen. Its three stages lead from Bad Frankenhausen to the Barbarossa Cave, from there to the Kyffhäuser Monument, and then back to Bad Frankenhausen. The trail is certified as a Quality Trail by the Wanderbares Deutschland hiking association, is well signposted, and is regularly checked for defects.

From April to October, a shuttle is available at the Kyffhäuser Monument for people with limited mobility, running between the car parks and the ticket office on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It also runs on weekdays during the Thuringian school holidays. Check the times before your visit.
