In Oberheldrungen, revealing traces of architectural history meet a practical way to explore the village on foot. St. Boniface Church was built from natural stone in 1716 as a hall church; the massive eastern tower has a medieval core. A stone cross also stands at a crossroads on the northern edge of the village. A circular trail leads to Oberheldrungen and waypoint 10.

St. Boniface Church: Building Phases and Details

The church brings together several periods of construction. It was built as a hall church in 1716, while the core of the massive eastern tower is medieval. A sacristy was added to the church in 1830. These dates give the building a clear chronological structure, without reducing its history to a single phase of construction.

The furnishings and architecture of the interior also make their own distinctive contributions: a Baroque pulpit altar with Corinthian columns supports an altarpiece dating from around 1800. It depicts Jesus and the Samaritan woman. The nave is spanned by a plastered barrel vault; the interior is also defined by a gallery on three sides. Friedrich Gerhardt built the organ in the second half of the 19th century. Alongside the history of the tower and sacristy, the altar, vault, gallery and organ represent other aspects of the church.

Stone Cross and Circular Trail

The stone cross is located at a crossroads on the northern edge of the village. For a hike that includes Oberheldrungen as a destination, the circular trail has two possible starting points: Heldrungen railway station or, alternatively, the hiking car park in Braunsroda. From there, it leads via waypoints 5 and 9 to Oberheldrungen, at waypoint 10. Check the current condition of the route before setting off. This lets you plan the hike using the specified starting points and waypoints without assuming a walking time.

More to Explore in the Kyffhäuserkreis Region

The wider Kyffhäuserkreis region offers a range of distinctly different options beyond local history. Barbarossa Cave is an anhydrite cave between the villages of Rottleben and Steinthaleben in the municipality of Kyffhäuserland. Five miners discovered it in 1865 in connection with the resumption of copper shale mining. Its name refers to the legend of Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa’s return: geology and tradition come together here.

The Sondershausen Adventure Mine offers guided tours year-round at a depth of 670 metres, including an approximately two-hour truck tour through the underground labyrinth. The mine is also home to the world’s deepest concert hall, where concerts and cabaret events are held regularly. A visit therefore combines a guided tour underground with a venue whose programme extends beyond the mine tour.

The Wiehe Model Railway and the Funkenburg Archaeological Open-Air Museum in Westgreußen appeal to other interests. The model railway exhibition is open year-round and covers 12,000 square metres. The Funkenburg presents Germany’s only reconstruction of a Germanic settlement on a prominent hill spur above the Helbe Valley. Its educational activity programmes include pottery, baking, wool processing, fishing-net making and archery.

For hikers, the route layout of the Kyffhäuser Trail is another point of interest in the Kyffhäuserkreis: this 37-kilometre circular route starts and ends in Bad Frankenhausen. Its three stages run from Bad Frankenhausen to Barbarossa Cave, from there to the Kyffhäuser Monument, and then back to Bad Frankenhausen. The trail has been certified as a “Quality Trail Wanderable Germany,” is well signposted and is regularly inspected for defects. At the Kyffhäuser Monument, a shuttle between the car parks and the ticket area is available to people with limited mobility from April to October on Saturdays and Sundays between 10:00 and 17:00; it also runs on weekdays during Thuringian school holidays. Check the timetable before your visit.
