In northern Thuringia, Nausitz lies at the southern tip of the Golden Aue, near the Unstrut and at the foot of the Schrecke. Two historic focal points shape the village’s history: St. John’s Church, with its original defensive tower, and the history of the manor estate, with its manor house, park and preserved farm buildings. There is also a marked hiking trail from Nausitz to the Four Beeches south of Gehofen. Thus, architectural history and a clearly named outdoor destination sit side by side. When planning your visit, you can decide whether to focus on the historic periods or the hike.
St. John’s Church: Defensive Tower and Renewal
The original defensive tower of St. John’s Church dates from the 13th century. The church was closed in 1981 due to its dilapidated condition; the last service there took place on Eternal Life Sunday that same year. In 2002, the parish and the circle of friends brought the church out of its deep slumber. From 2003 onward, the church tower, roof, façade, wooden barrel vault, interior plaster, doors and stained-glass windows were gradually renovated. This sequence connects the medieval origins with later chapters in the church’s history. The closure, the community’s commitment and the renovation work are distinct stages that can be distinguished chronologically.
Nausitz Manor Estate: Residence, Manor House and Park
The years 1696 and 1861 onward mark different stages in the history of the manor estate. In 1696, von Creutz built a new residence for Nausitz Manor. From 1861 onward, Georg Rudolph von Römer extensively renovated Nausitz Manor House, also known as Nausitz Castle, and laid out a park with rare trees. Impressive farm buildings and the steward’s house still survive. The dates distinguish the construction of a new residence from the later renovation of the manor house and the creation of the park. The surviving farm buildings and steward’s house also show that the estate’s history extends beyond its residential buildings.
Two Historical Timelines
By comparison, the history of the defensive tower reaches further back than the cited construction phases of the manor estate: it dates from the 13th century, while the estate’s history includes the later milestones of the 1696 residence and the renovation beginning in 1861. The church also has its own later history, with its closure in 1981, the community’s commitment in 2002 and the work starting in 2003. This makes it possible to distinguish the two cultural focal points by building and period.
Hiking Trail to the Four Beeches
The marked hiking trail runs from Nausitz to the Four Beeches south of Gehofen. Its named endpoint makes the hike a specific outdoor option alongside the historical themes. If you plan to take the trail, check its current condition before setting off. Your travel planning therefore involves two different questions: Which chapters of the village’s history would you like to focus on, and would you also like to take a hike with a clearly named destination?
