Palace history, music and trails through green landscapes give Sondershausen several distinct reasons to visit. The palace museum focuses on the former residence of the Princes of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen and a small collection of historical musical instruments; outside, hiking, cycling and riding trails offer other ways to explore. The seasonal Sonnenblick Mountain Bath adds another option, but is currently closed until the next bathing season. You can choose what to focus on: culture, outdoor activities or a swim when the season resumes.
Palace Museum and Musical Tradition
The Sondershausen Palace Museum is housed in the former residence of the Princes of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen. It displays a small, carefully selected collection of historical musical instruments connected with the town’s musical tradition. This connection gives the collection its own focus: the history of the residence meets Sondershausen’s musical heritage.
The Harz Tourism Association’s free multimedia guide, available in German and English, leads visitors to eight stops around Sondershausen Palace. This lets you explore the palace beyond the museum, with stops in the surrounding area. The eight stops give the guide a specific framework; German and English are the available languages.
Hiking Trails, Trail and Beech Forest
Many well-marked hiking, cycling and riding trails run around Sondershausen. The network leads through Kyffhäuser Nature Park and the Hainleite Landscape Conservation Area. This offers a choice of different ways to get active. Signposting and trail conditions may change, so check local conditions before setting out on a specific route.
The Frauenberg Trail is a distinct, clearly designated hiking option that complements the trail network: it is a 1.6-kilometre family adventure trail with seven different activity stations. Its stated length and stations set it apart as a specific trail option from the many hiking, cycling and riding trails around the town.
Possen Recreation and Leisure Park is located in one of Europe’s largest contiguous beech forest areas. The beech forest gives this day-trip destination a distinctive natural setting, while the Frauenberg Trail, with its length and seven activity stations, offers a different focus. Whether you’d like to plan your trip around culture, hiking or woodland landscapes, Sondershausen has a range of options.
The Mountain Bath and the Season
Sonnenblick Mountain Bath is a seasonal municipal outdoor swimming pool and is currently closed until the next bathing season. It has a 50-metre pool, diving towers at one and three metres, a water slide, a paddling pool, a playground and a beach volleyball court. The facilities offer swimming, play and sports; because the pool is currently closed, don’t plan on using it right now.
Beyond Sondershausen: Kyffhäuser District
In the wider Kyffhäuser District destination, the Sondershausen Adventure Mine offers year-round guided tours at a depth of 670 metres, including an approximately two-hour truck tour through the underground labyrinth. The mine also contains the world’s deepest concert hall, where concerts and cabaret performances are held regularly. The depth and approximate tour duration give this attraction a different focus from the palace museum in Sondershausen and can help you choose regional day trips.
