Art, landscape and architectural history in Bad Frankenhausen
Bad Frankenhausen/Kyffhäuser combines a floodplain landscape with distinctive cultural sites: the Panorama Museum displays Werner Tübke’s monumental painting, while the Oberkirche and Hausmannsturm represent different periods of construction. When choosing your destination, you can therefore take in art, architectural history and landscape. If you would also like to go hiking, the Kyffhäuserweg offers a specific regional option.
Bad Frankenhausen lies at the foot of the Kyffhäuser hills, surrounded by a floodplain landscape of fields, pastures and traditional orchards. This landscape setting adds another perspective on the town to its cultural sights. Which of these becomes the focus of your trip depends on whether you mainly want to see the painting, explore architectural history or also plan a longer hike.
The Panorama Museum and its dimensions
The Panorama Museum presents Werner Tübke’s monumental painting “Early Bourgeois Revolution in Germany.” Two measurements give a vivid sense of the scale of the rotunda: it is 14 metres high and has a circumference of 123 metres. The painting depicts more than 3,000 figures. The work is therefore on a very different scale from the individual historic buildings in town. You can experience the museum as part of a public guided tour or with an audio guide.
The Oberkirche and Hausmannsturm
The Oberkirche, also known as the Church of Our Lady on the Mountain, was completed in 1382 as a Gothic basilica. It was financed by the local salt-boiling guild. Its architectural style, year of completion and the guild’s involvement each offer a different way into the building’s history.
The Hausmannsturm tells an older story of construction: it was a keep with a palas, built around 1210 and incorporated into the newly constructed town wall. Comparing it with the Oberkirche, completed in 1382, brings the different periods of construction in the town into focus. For directions: the Hausmannsturm can be reached via Poststraße; there is a car park by the spa gardens.
Take the Kyffhäuser-Therme into account when planning
The Kyffhäuser-Therme is a brine spa that uses brine from the certified local Kyffhäuser spring. For travel planning, it is also important to note that the operator currently reports the bathing and wellness areas as closed for modernisation. So do not plan on using these areas for bathing or wellness during your visit.
Hiking options in the Kyffhäuser district
In the wider Kyffhäuser district travel region, the Kyffhäuserweg offers a specific connection to Bad Frankenhausen: the 37-kilometre circular route starts and ends in the town. Its three stages lead from Bad Frankenhausen to the Barbarossahöhle, from there to the Kyffhäuser Monument, and then back to Bad Frankenhausen. The route is certified as a “Qualitätsweg Wanderbares Deutschland” (Quality Trail: Hiker-Friendly Germany), is well signposted and is regularly checked for defects. This gives you both the circular route and its stage destinations to consider when planning.
The Barbarossahöhle is also part of the wider Kyffhäuser district travel region. This anhydrite cave lies between the districts of Rottleben and Steinthaleben in the municipality of Kyffhäuserland. Five miners discovered it in 1865, when copper shale mining resumed. It was named after the legend of Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa, who is said to return. The cave thus combines a geological feature with a specific, documented discovery story.
For a different kind of outing in the wider Kyffhäuser district, visit the Sondershausen Adventure Mine: guided tours are available year-round at a depth of 670 metres, including an approximately two-hour truck tour through the underground labyrinth. The mine is also home to the world’s deepest concert hall, where concerts and cabaret performances are held regularly. For your trip, this gives you two different options: a guided tour underground and events in a uniquely situated hall.
