Werdohl can be explored through several specific themes: a marked route through the town center along the Lenne, hiking trails, climbing rocks and industrial history. The options vary in activity and scale—from the 1.9 km route through the town center to the history of a rolling mill.

The Lenne, the Town Center and Views

The marked 1.9 km route through the town center includes the Lenne Fountain at the town bridge, the Lenne riverside promenade and the “Lenneken” sculpture. The small figure watches the fountain with an umbrella. If you are interested in this route, it offers a clearly defined walk with three named stops in the town.

The Lenneroute passes through Werdohl and offers a different focus: it is an option for cyclists, while the route through the town center is described as a short walk through the town. The viewpoint above Osmecke offers another perspective on Werdohl. These three Lenne-related features—the town-center route, cycling route and viewpoint—represent different ways of experiencing the area.

Hiking Trails in the Countryside

In the Dösseln–Brenge area, the Eichelhäherweg is one of the named hiking trails. A specific start and end point is given for the forest nature trail: the 1.8 km route leads from the Landwehr by the Protestant cemetery to the Hexentanzplatz in Werdohl. This gives you a choice between a named hiking trail in the Dösseln–Brenge area and a route with specified endpoints. Check local trail conditions on the Eichelhäherweg before setting out.

Climbing Rocks and Routes

On the way from Altenaer Straße to the climbing area, you reach the Denkmalwand first. It has established routes in the intermediate to difficult grades. The Lennewächter is a rock located somewhat out of sight in a green setting, with established, challenging routes. The Lenneplatte is used for climbing instruction and beginner courses. If you are looking for a course, check dates and registration details in advance.

The route information also varies considerably: the LennebrĂĽggler is about 50 meters beyond the Lenneplatte and offers eight climbing routes, mostly grade 7, as well as two more routes at grade 4. The Werdohler Neunerplatte has 19 routes, mostly slab climbs on sloping rock in grades 4 and 5. Thus, grades 4 and 5 predominate at the Neunerplatte, while the LennebrĂĽggler is mostly grade 7. Route numbers, grades and availability can change; check local information before climbing.

Industrial History and the Town Museum

In 1789, a blackplate rolling mill was established in Werdohl-Elverlingsen; it is described as the first on the European continent. In 1817, it was converted into Germany’s first wire rolling mill. The permanent exhibition at the Werdohl Town Museum explores changes brought about by industrialization and the city’s rapid growth: four themed rooms are devoted to economic, social and cultural developments. Check the current visiting arrangements before going to the museum.

For nature enthusiasts, there is also information about the Lenne: in the Werdohl area, it is a grayling and trout region. If you plan to fish, check access and permit requirements with the local fisheries authorities in advance.

More to Explore in the Märkischer Kreis

The wider travel destination of Märkischer Kreis offers its own cultural and natural attractions. Burg Altena is a monument of national importance and was home to the world’s first and therefore oldest permanent youth hostel. The German Wire Museum covers wire production past and present, as well as the technological, social, economic and cultural history of wire; interactive stations invite visitors to take part. At the Luisenhütte, an interactive museum illustrates how iron was produced there and further processed into cast products.
