Iserlohn can be explored through three distinctive themes: Dechen Cave in the Letmathe district, the Maste-Barendorf industrial monument and the paths around Seilersee. This lets you tailor your choice of activities for a stay to your own interests: nature, industrial history or outdoor exercise each have specific places to visit in the city. If you are looking for a hotel in Iserlohn, this thematic overview is a useful starting point for planning your trip.

Caves, limestone and Seilersee

Dechen Cave in Letmathe is one of Germany’s largest stalactite caves. Above the cave, the forest nature trail provides information about rare plants growing on limestone. This brings two different aspects of nature into focus: the cave’s stalactite formations and the plants featured along the trail.

Seilersee is home to a local recreation area with paved paths for walking, hiking and jogging. Families with strollers, as well as older people and people with limited mobility, can also explore the natural surroundings of the lake. The paved paths accommodate different types of activity, from a leisurely walk to a jog.

Industrial heritage in Maste-Barendorf

The Historic Maste-Barendorf Factory Complex is a 19th-century industrial monument and is now a museum and artists’ village. At the Needle Museum, which includes a hairpin factory and brass foundry, you can watch hairpins being made during demonstrations. Visitors can also see brass parts being cast based on historical models. The combination of the historic complex and demonstrations of the production processes makes Barendorf a specific destination for anyone interested in industrial manufacturing methods.

Cycling route and getting there

The Ruhr-Lenne Loop offers a different focus: it combines challenging cycling with natural and idyllic scenery, as well as industrial charm, for all ages. Its western loop runs from the hiking station in Iserlohn via Hagen-Hohenlimburg and Schwerte back to Iserlohn, ending at Barendorf. In contrast, the paved paths around Seilersee are geared towards walking, hiking and jogging—a useful distinction when planning your activities.

Seilersee can be reached from Iserlohn via the A46, from the north via the B233 and from the south via the B236. After leaving the highway, follow the signs for the rest of the way. There is a parking area on site, which is also a possible starting point for a bike ride. As road conditions and signage can change, it is worth checking the latest directions before setting out.

The wider destination of Märkischer Kreis

Those looking beyond Iserlohn to the wider destination of Märkischer Kreis will find further cultural and nature attractions. Altena Castle is a monument of national importance and was home to the world’s first—and therefore oldest—permanent youth hostel. The German Wire Museum explores wire production in the past and present. As an interactive experience museum, it offers hands-on experiment stations and also covers the technological, social, economic and cultural history of wire. This is a different focus from the demonstrations at Maste-Barendorf: the museum centers on wire and its history, while Barendorf focuses on hairpin making and brass casting.

Luisenhütte is also in Märkischer Kreis. This visitor-oriented experience museum shows how iron was produced there and then processed into cast products. There is a geocaching multicache around Luisenhütte; visitors can borrow GPS devices at the Hüttenschänke and set off on a digital treasure hunt using a flyer. If you plan to take part, check in advance whether devices are available.

Among the nature reserves specifically mentioned in the limestone regions of northern Märkischer Kreis are the gorges of the Hönne Valley. At Felsenmeer Hemer, rock formations have been shaped over centuries by wind, water and people; the site is also one of the oldest iron ore mining areas in Westphalia. Felsenmeer can only be explored via designated paths. The designated panoramic trail leads to viewpoints; check the condition of the paths before your visit.
