Between the Lenne Valley and the Wiblingwerde Heights, Nachrodt-Wiblingwerde reveals two distinct landscapes. The districts of Nachrodt, Einsal and Opperhusen lie along the Lenne Valley, while the other districts are spread across the Wiblingwerde Plateau. Within the municipality, Wiblingwerde is officially recognized as a health resort. At Klarashöhe, a viewpoint overlooks the Lenne. The river valley and the heights provide different geographical reference points for exploring the municipality.

Hiking and Discovering Nature

The network of trails offers two different scales: eight SGV quality hiking trails extend across the municipality, while 32 marked local circular trails run through the Wiblingwerde Heights. When choosing a route, you can therefore start by considering the landscape: trails across the municipality or circular routes on the heights.

The forest nature trail focuses on natural history. Stops and information boards explain native trees, shrubs and animals. Guided walks can be arranged for groups, kindergartens and school classes by booking in advance. Visitors interested in native plants and animals can enjoy a different thematic experience here than at viewpoints and historic buildings.

Springs, Churches and Mills

Johannisborn is the oldest cultural monument in Nachrodt-Wiblingwerde. In pagan times, the spring was considered sacred; later, its water was used for baptisms at St. John’s Church in Wiblingwerde. St. John’s Church in Wiblingwerde was built in the first half of the 13th century as a late Romanesque hall church and was first mentioned in 1316. The term “hall church” describes a building in which the nave and side aisles are almost the same height.

The Brenscheid grain mill is first documented in 1593. Its regular program includes bread-baking demonstrations and a small country market. Regional products are sold at this market during the seasonal mill baking day; check the dates before visiting.

The oil mill preserves another aspect of the history of milling technology. It retains an overshot waterwheel and wooden gearing, which were used to grind and pound rapeseed to extract oil. “Overshot” means that water strikes the wheel from above. The exterior of the oil mill can be viewed at any time; visits inside and demonstrations are only possible by prior arrangement.

A Glimpse into Local History

The Langenstück workers’ settlement adds a testament to industrial work and living to the area’s local history. It was built between 1904 and 1913 for employees of the Phoenix mining and smelting works. The settlement is freely accessible, and its exterior can be viewed at any time. As the houses are occupied, visits are limited to viewing them from the outside.

More Cultural Attractions in the Märkischer Kreis

In the wider destination of the Märkischer Kreis, Altena Castle is a monument of national importance and was the site of the world’s first—and therefore oldest—permanent youth hostel. The German Wire Museum in the Märkischer Kreis also offers its own cultural and historical focus: it explores the history of wire technology as well as its social, economic and cultural history; interactive stations invite visitors to take part.
