Schalksmühle brings together longer hiking routes, a cultural and community venue, and a museum dedicated to the history of rural life. There is also Volmepark, with its own history of development. When planning your stay, you can consider outdoor activities, culture and local history as separate focuses.

Hiking in Schalksmühle

Schalksmühle has a well-developed, clearly signposted network of hiking trails. The Schalksmühler Rundweg and the Volme-Höhen-Weg are among the longer hiking routes. If hiking is to be a focus of your trip, these two names offer specific options for a longer tour. The clear signage describes the network as a whole; the two named routes are specifically classified as longer trails.

Volmepark and cultural venues

Volmepark was redesigned as part of REGIONALE 2013 and opened as a multigenerational park in 2015. This sequence of dates puts its development in context: the redesign was followed by its opening as a multigenerational park.

Schalksmühle’s Kreuzkirche became the Third Place “8Giebel,” a venue for culture, education and community. Bauernhaus Wippekühl offers a different focus: this listed cultural monument is a museum that brings earlier rural life to life. This experience includes both the building and an extensive permanent exhibition of local-history objects, inside and outside. Group visits can be arranged by appointment.

Regional themes in the Märkischer Kreis

The Märkischer Kreis provides its own, broader thematic context. Burg Altena is a monument of national significance and was the site of the world’s first—and therefore oldest—permanent youth hostel. The German Wire Museum explores the technological history of wire as well as its social, economic and cultural history. Luisenhütte is a visitor-focused experience museum that vividly shows how iron was produced there and further processed into cast products. The three themes offer different perspectives: the history of a historic site, a material and a production process.

Archaeological and landscape themes are also part of the Märkischer Kreis. Based on its finds, Balver Höhle is one of Europe’s most important sites for cultures of the Middle Palaeolithic. At Felsenmeer Hemer, rock formations have been shaped over centuries by wind, water and human activity; the site is also home to one of the oldest iron ore mining areas in Westphalia. Felsenmeer can only be visited via designated paths. The signposted panoramic trail leads to the viewpoints. Check the route and safety information before visiting.

The Sauerländer Kleinbahn offers another regional perspective. On certain days, the museum train carries visitors in restored carriages between Hüinghausen and Köbbinghauser Hammer. On operating days between May and October, the trains travel through the Elsetal landscape. Outside the published operating times, special steam or diesel trips can be booked. As operating days, route arrangements and booking options may change, check dates and availability before planning.
