On Kohlberg, the Quitmann Tower combines a prominent high point with sweeping views across the Sauerland. Neuenrade also offers a museum, historic buildings, a spring and trails of various types.

Views and natural highlights

At 514 metres, Kohlberg is the highest point in Neuenrade. The 14-metre-high Quitmann Tower stands there, offering views across the Sauerland. From the tower, the view extends across the Lennetal valley as far as Wildewiese and beyond.

For a different perspective, visit the source of the Hönne at Großer Attig, at an elevation of 437 metres. As an intermittent spring, it can dry up when the groundwater level falls. The Hönne rises in Neuenrade and gives the Hönnetal holiday region its name. Neuenrade is therefore home both to a notable viewpoint and to the source of a river whose name defines the holiday region.

Town and industrial history

The Neuenrade Town Museum displays exhibits on the town’s history, industrial history and transport history across three departments. The motte in the district of Küntrop provides an architectural highlight: it is a 22-metre-high wooden motte-and-bailey castle. Here you can encounter different forms of the town’s history – exhibits arranged by theme in the museum and a specifically described structure in Küntrop.

The parish church of St. Lambertus in Neuenrade-Affeln contains a late Gothic Antwerp altarpiece. Its scenes depict the lives of Christ, Mary and St. Lambertus. At Gut Berentrop, the bloomery furnace is considered the best-preserved bloomery furnace in the Märkischer Sauerland region. Manfred Sönnecken discovered it in 1965; it was dated to the 13th century. The region’s cultural history thus ranges from religious art to a testament to its industrial heritage.

The history trail spans a distinct period: it begins with a panel about the year 0 – the birth of Christ – and ends with a panel about the 650th anniversary of the town of Neuenrade in 2005. The trail thus links a historical point of reference with a specifically dated town anniversary.

Trails, winter sports and other activities

The ski slope on Kohlberg has a downhill run 430 metres long and two T-bar lifts with a mid-station. If skiing is the reason for your trip, check the operating days for your dates in advance.

For active outings, you can compare two routes by length and format. The Vita-Parcours starts at the Quitmann Tower hiking car park on Kohlberg and includes 15 exercise stations along a 3.3-kilometre running route. The Roden-Hennes-Weg, by contrast, is a scenic circular hiking trail around Neuenrade, just under 10 kilometres long and marked with the trail sign N1. So you can choose between a shorter running route with exercise stations and a longer, marked hiking loop.

Mountain biking, road cycling and leisure cycling are all possible on the Hönnetal Cycle Route in Neuenrade. Three different types of cycling are therefore available to cycling enthusiasts. Karlo, a children’s carousel on Neuenrade’s Platz der Generationen, offers a very different kind of attraction.

Plan your visit and choose accommodation

Visiting hours for the motte are listed as the first Sunday of each month from Easter to October, from 14:00 to 17:00. Check in advance whether these hours apply to your visit. If you are looking for accommodation in Neuenrade, you can plan your stay around your interests: views from Kohlberg, the different historical themes, or hiking and cycling options.
