The world’s first youth hostel opened at Altena Castle in 1914. The wire industry has also shaped the town to this day. In addition, there is a history and nature trail, a treasure hunt in the town centre and seasonal paddling activities. During your stay in Altena, you can choose from castle and industrial history, nature-related topics and activities.
Castle and Wire History
Wire has been drawn in Altena and the surrounding region since the 16th century. What was once a laborious craft developed into an industry that continues to shape Altena to this day. The German Wire Museum showcases and explains wire production, past and present. Under the motto “From Chain Mail to Superconductor,” the hands-on museum brings this transformation to life: visitors can try out many of the exhibits, and interactive stations invite them to take part.
Alongside the history of technology, the German Wire Museum in the Märkischer Kreis also explores the social, economic and cultural history of wire. In the regional context of the Märkischer Kreis, the wire industry in the Sauerland used so-called Osemunde iron as a raw material; this exceptionally soft iron could be drawn into fine wire. The Luisenhütte offers another regional perspective within the broader destination of the Märkischer Kreis: the hands-on museum shows how iron was produced there and further processed into cast products.
The adventure elevator takes visitors straight up to Altena Castle. Check whether it is currently operating before you travel. In the Märkischer Kreis, Altena Castle is also considered a monument of national significance. Tallenbrink, synagogues and the Jewish cemetery are traces of Jewish life in Altena.
