At Miltenberg’s market square, half-timbered houses dating back four centuries frame the Renaissance market fountain, built between 1583 and 1589. This historic ensemble offers a glimpse into the town’s history: at the Stadt Museum, you can learn more about Miltenberg’s local and regional history in three historic half-timbered houses on the market square.
Local history, icons and music
The Museum Burg Miltenberg offers a different perspective. There, 16 Greek and Russian icons dating from the 16th to the 19th century are displayed alongside works by contemporary artists. The exhibition concept has been under revision since 2024. Miltenberg thus offers two distinct approaches side by side: the town’s history in historic houses, and the encounter between older sacred art and contemporary perspectives.
If you prefer to explore the old town with a guide, you can join a town tour led by certified guides. They take groups or individual visitors through Miltenberg’s old town. As specific tour formats may change, it is advisable to check the current offerings in advance.
The Miltenberg District Cultural Weeks also offer a reason to plan your stay around events. They take place every year from mid-September, with a varied programme for all ages; exact dates vary. The programme includes concerts featuring classical and contemporary music, as well as jazz and electronic music events. The events on offer vary from year to year.
The district’s cultural life also includes the International Choir Competition, one of the longest-running international choir competitions, and the Youth Culture Prize, which has been awarded since 1979. It is announced annually, alternating between the fields of art and music. At past choir competitions, close personal connections have repeatedly developed between visiting choirs and local residents. In Miltenberg, Kunstnetz provides children and young people with cultural and aesthetic education through encounters and opportunities to work with artists from the Bayerischer Untermain region.
Trails between the town forest and the Sea of Rocks
Culture and activity also come together beyond the museums. The “3 im Wald” experience trail combines a barefoot nature trail, an art trail and a tree interpretation trail. For more detailed directions, the town walk follows its own route: starting at Mildenburg Castle, it leads through the town forest and through the Steintor gate. After turning at the Steintor, the Felsenmeer is about 600 metres away. This distance refers to the trail section, not the walking time.
The Felsenmeer is a natural monument formed during the last ice ages, between 2.58 million and 11,700 years ago. Miltenberg’s town park offers a different kind of nature experience: it was laid out at the end of the 19th century in the style of an English garden and as an arboretum. Today, it is home to almost 150 different species of trees and shrubs. For those interested in the history of the landscape, alongside the geological natural monument there is also a landscaped park with a great diversity of woody plants.
Looking beyond the town puts these impressions into the context of the district’s landscape. Miltenberg lies in a region between the Odenwald and Spessart, whose character is shaped by deeply incised river and stream valleys. Along the Main Cycle Route, visitors can discover numerous castles and castle ruins in the district, as well as their history. For trips in the Odenwald, the NeO-Bus and NaTourBus are available to hikers and cyclists; bike trailers are available specifically for cyclists. As these transport services operate seasonally, check the information before your trip.
Wine and brewing culture in the region
Wine is another regional discovery. In the Miltenberg district, you can visit one of the many Häckerwirtschaften or wine festivals and enjoy regional wine. Häckerwirtschaften and wine taverns offer an authentic atmosphere alongside fine wines. Opening dates vary from one venue to another, so it is worth checking dates before making plans.
In Miltenberg, Brauhaus Faust offers brewery tours that explain what makes its beers unique. Tour availability may change, so check the current offerings in advance. Together with museums, old town tours, trails and events, these options offer a range of different ways to plan your trip—from local history and art to landscapes and regional food and drink.
