Explore Dorfprozelten along routes with different themes: through the vineyard, across orchards and forest, or on a route to Kollenburg Castle ruins and the war memorial chapel. There is also a red deer enclosure at the edge of the forest and a local history museum in the former railway station building. The landscape and local history offer different ways to get to know the area.
Vineyard, Forest and Route Highlights
The Vineyard Circular Trail starts at the car park at the Alte Obstplantage. It leads to a rest area with benches at the upper end of the vineyard, then returns to the starting point through the vineyard. The rest area is a clearly identified stop along the loop; before setting out, it is advisable to check the local route information.
The Bichelberg Circular Trail also starts at the car park at the Alte Obstplantage, but follows a different route. It first descends through orchards to the “Altenbücher Kirchweg” European Cultural Route. The route passes the memorial stone, enters the Sellgrund and returns through the forest towards Dorfprozelten. The vineyard and the orchards are thus two distinct landscape features of the routes described.
The somewhat longer Eiserner Pol Trail starts at the car park by the Main. It follows quiet forest paths and steep climbs to the “Eiserner Pol.” Along the way, there are views across the vineyards to the Main Valley. If you include this route in your day’s plans, bear in mind that the steep climbs are part of the trail and check the local route information in advance.
Another route links a viewpoint, castle ruins and a chapel: the Kollenburg Chapel Trail starts and ends at the hiking car park by the Main. From the Steingasse signpost, it follows the Marienweg and passes the Heimatblick viewpoint on the way to Kollenburg Castle ruins. The route continues past a shelter to the Dorfprozelten war memorial chapel. These named stops give the hike a different focus from the paths through vineyards, meadows and forest. Here, too, it is worth checking the local route information before setting out.
Nature and Local History
The red deer enclosure is above the vineyard at the edge of the forest and can be visited year-round. Please observe local notices before visiting. As a destination in its own right, the enclosure offers a nature-focused experience, while the routes described focus on landscapes and their paths.
Dorfprozelten’s local history museum is housed in the former railway station building. Its changing exhibitions present the history of the community and the life’s work of earlier generations. The focus is therefore on local and generational history—a different way to explore the area than following routes through the landscape. The exhibitions change, so do not plan a museum visit around a particular exhibition without first checking the current visitor information.
The name “Dornbuschschmiede” also points to local history: in Dorfprozelten, it is the familiar name for the last blacksmith, August Dornbusch, who died in 1983. The name thus brings a specific person from local history into view alongside the landscapes and cultural themes of the routes and the local history museum.
Miltenberg as the Wider Travel Destination
The wider travel destination of Miltenberg lies between the Odenwald and Spessart, and the district is characterized by deeply incised river and stream valleys. The cultural attractions there also offer a distinct regional point of interest: the Stadt Museum in Miltenberg presents the history of the town and region in three historic half-timbered houses on the market square, the Schnatterloch. The Miltenberg Castle Museum displays 16 Greek and Russian icons from the 16th to the 19th century alongside works by contemporary artists.
Miltenberg District Culture Weeks take place every year from mid-September; the exact dates vary. The music program includes classical and contemporary music, as well as jazz and electronic music. If you would like to include these events in your travel plans, check the dates for the relevant year. These attractions belong to the wider travel destination of Miltenberg; the routes, red deer enclosure and local history museum described above are in Dorfprozelten itself.
