The routes in Bürgstadt have different focuses: the “Mainhölle and Sea of Images” cultural trail leads to traces of quarries and archaeology, while forest trails explore ecological topics and the mountain bike loop combines half-timbered houses, winegrowers’ estates and stonecarving. There are also options for different time budgets, from around an hour and a half to circular routes of around four hours. This makes it easy to plan a visit around your interests and the time you have available for walking.

A cultural trail among quarries and history

The “Mainhölle and Sea of Images” European Cultural Trail is a 10.7-kilometre circular route that takes around four hours to walk. It starts at the “Stutz” hiking car park or in the centre of Bürgstadt and leads to the Mainhölle quarries. Tall sandstone columns, known as Heunesteine, were quarried there for many years. The route also includes a reconstructed archaeological gate from a ring fort dating to the Urnfield period (1200–700 BC). The Centgrafenkapelle is also along the way; it was left unfinished as a result of the Thirty Years’ War. The quarry, ring fort and chapel give the route several distinct historical points of interest.

Choose hiking routes by time and theme

A 6.8-kilometre section or loop of the Franconian Red Wine Hiking Trail takes around two hours. It starts in the centre of Bürgstadt or at the Tabakhalle. The youth hiking trail is a 10-kilometre circular route starting at the “Stutz” hiking car park and takes around four hours. Its theme is the world of the Nibelung legends. Alongside the cultural trail, this offers a similar time commitment but a different route theme.

The forest educational and discovery trail is shorter: the 2-kilometre circular route from the “Stutz” hiking car park takes around 1.5 hours and is suitable for pushchairs. The forest trail in Bürgstadt’s municipal forest has around 20 stations about tree species and forest ecology. Topics include the importance of ants in the forest and of woodpecker trees in nature. These offer a different focus from the cultural and historical stops along the cultural trail.

By bike: half-timbered houses, estates and stonecarving

The Bürgstadt Bü1 mountain bike loop starts and ends at the historic town hall. It passes old half-timbered houses and numerous winegrowers’ estates. During Häckerzeit, the estates invite visitors to sample wine and enjoy a snack. The route also passes Heunesäulen, millstones and other examples of historic stonecarving before descending to the Centgrafenkapelle. The same chapel is therefore also a stop on this route, while the town hall clearly marks the start and finish of the loop.

In Churfranken, Bürgstadt wine is affectionately known as “Börscheder.” Together with the winegrowers’ estates’ invitation to visitors during Häckerzeit, this gives the wine tradition a practical place in your travel plans: the seasonal timing is key if you’d like to stop for a wine tasting and a snack. Whether you’re deciding between hiking and cycling, there are different ways to explore Bürgstadt’s stonecarving history, forest themes and wine.
