The 7.5 km European Cultural Trail “Wildenstein Castle” explores the cultural landscape between Eschau and the castle. On the return route, it leads through the Elsava Valley along the former railway line. Eschau also offers a range of ways to enjoy a stay focused on culture and nature: the market town lies at the foot of the Geishöhe, in the Elsava Valley and in the Spessart Nature Park.
Cultural Trails Between Town, Valley and Castle
The “Wildenstein Castle” Cultural Trail is one way to experience the landscape and history along a single route. In Hobbach, another European Cultural Trail runs from St. John’s Church via Dillhof and Oberaulenbach Castle, past the Wolfsgrube and a viewpoint, into the Elsava Valley and to the Hobbach school camp; from there, it returns to St. John’s Church. The route is about 7 km long and has an elevation gain of around 100 m. The two trails are therefore similar in length; for the Hobbach trail, the elevation gain and individual stops are also specified. The long-distance hiking trail Spessartweg 2 also passes through Eschau.
Art, Castles and Local History
The Sommerau Sculpture Garden features numerous surrealist sculptures by artist Karin Günther among flower beds, shrubs and old trees. In the background are the former Fechenbach noble residence and the small castle “Malepartus”. Four guided tours take place each year between May and September, usually on a Sunday afternoon. They begin with Karin Günther’s artistic work, followed by the history of the former noble residence and its inhabitants. Check the specific tour dates before your trip.
Wildenstein Castle is a medieval fortification on the ridge of Sommerberg, above Wildenstein, a village belonging to Eschau. It is freely accessible and has information boards; conditions on site may change. At Sommerau Water Castle, a wing built in 1650 has been preserved, along with the remains of an older defensive tower and the surrounding moat. The castle is privately owned and is not open to the public. In individual cases, a visit may be possible by prior arrangement with the owner.
The Epiphany Church in Eschau offers another place for quiet contemplation. It is open daily from 09:30 to 17:30 for prayer and quiet reflection. As opening arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the current hours before visiting. The Historic Town Hall also houses the Burglandschaft Castle Landscape Education and Information Centre, which provides a wide range of information about the regional castle network.
Local commemorative history includes a memorial case created by Eschau artist Karin Günther, which was unveiled at a memorial service in the Elsavahalle. In this way, the market town of Eschau commemorated the deportation of Jewish residents Jette Marx (1858–1943), known as Jendele, Lina Mosbacher (1872–1942), Gustav Wolf (1879–1942) and Flora Wolf, née Reis (1886–1942), who lived in Eschau and Sommerau.
Recreation and Practical Information
The Wildensee recreation area includes a lake, a relaxation pier, a water-treading facility, a boules court and barbecue huts. In Hobbach, the newly landscaped railway embankment provides a small local recreation park with benches, a playground, a mud play area and a basketball hoop. Alongside the cultural trails, these offer specific places to enjoy the outdoors.
The Spessart Experience Centre cannot be reached directly by car. Visitors can park at the kindergarten or on a side street, then walk through nature for about 12 minutes to the centre. Check the current parking information before your visit. In the timetable effective from 15 December 2024, bus routes 64, 69 and 83 were listed as serving Eschau. As this timetable is dated, check current connections before travelling.
