Miltenberg combines a medieval old town with Mildenburg Castle and a strong culinary culture. The town offers something for both interests.

Half-timbered houses, castle and museum

Half-timbered houses, romantic lanes and hidden corners define the medieval old town. A striking landmark is the Schnatterloch: its market fountain and half-timbered houses form a historic ensemble. The Gasthaus zum Riesen is also part of the town’s history; it is considered Germany’s oldest inn for nobility.

Mildenburg Castle was built in the mid-12th century by the Lords of DĂĽrn on the orders of Emperor Conrad III. Today, the Museum Burg Miltenberg displays icons and contemporary art within the historic castle walls. Medieval architectural history and contemporary art thus meet in the same place. From the keep, you can enjoy views over the Main Valley and Miltenberg.

Getting around the building is also important when visiting the museum: all floors of the Museum Burg Miltenberg are accessible by lift. If you would like to explore the town’s history with a guide, certified tours cover historical and culinary topics as well as topics for children. The different themes let you choose according to your interests, without trying to fit every aspect into a single visit.

Culinary delights and brewery experiences

Since 2018, Miltenberg and Bürgstadt have officially been among Bavaria’s Culinary Destinations. In Miltenberg, beer, bread and coffee sommeliers are based along a 300-metre stretch between the Schwarzviertel district and the Schnatterloch. This short distance brings three different culinary fields together in one urban setting.

You can also explore the subject of beer in greater depth: Miltenberg offers brewery experience tours and the opportunity to brew beer at a craft brewery. Together with the culinary tours, these offer a choice between a guided introduction and a hands-on brewing experience.

Cycling routes and different themes

From Miltenberg, cyclists can follow the Limes Cycle Route along the Mud River. It overlaps with the 3-Länder Cycle Route. Upstream from Miltenberg, the Main Cycle Route follows the Main, with the slopes of the Odenwald and Spessart hills and exposed quarries alongside it. The two descriptions highlight different features: one route follows the Mud and connects with the 3-Länder Cycle Route; the other follows the Main and the landscape of its slopes.

When planning your trip, it’s worth making your preferred route a focus of your stay: would you rather cycle along the Main or choose the section by the Mud?

Getting to the museums

From Miltenberg railway station, you can reach the museums on foot in 20 to 30 minutes or take the bus to the Miltenberg Linde stop. Check connections before you travel. This lets you factor in a museum visit when planning your journey, while your choice of the old town, castle, culinary experiences or cycling route will shape the rest of your stay.
