In Lichtenstein, castle history, Wilhelm Hauff, hiking and winter sports offer different kinds of travel experiences. When planning your trip, you can choose your focus based on whether you are more interested in the literary connection, a hiking route or winter sports.
The Castle and Wilhelm Hauff
Lichtenstein Castle was built between 1840 and 1842 on the foundations of an older knights’ castle; Wilhelm Hauff’s novel “Lichtenstein” served as its inspiration. This brings together the older castle site, the construction of the castle and a literary connection in one cultural theme. The Wilhelm Hauff Museum displays the author’s works. This allows you to distinguish the literary inspiration for the castle from the presentation of Hauff’s works in the museum.
The Albsteig and the Lichtenstein Cross-Country Ski Trail
Stages 10 and 11 of the Albsteig (HW1) pass through Lichtenstein. The Lichtenstein cross-country ski trail is 16 kilometres long in total and is designed as a combination trail for Nordic skiing and skating. Its seasonal grooming depends on conditions. This gives you a choice between hiking and a trail for two winter sports. If the trail is key to your plans, check in advance whether it has been groomed.
More Trails, Culture and Nature
In the wider Reutlingen destination, the Hochgehträumt circular hiking trail leads from Lichtenstein Castle along impressive viewpoint cliffs directly to Nebelhöhle Cave. While stages 10 and 11 of the Albsteig pass through Lichtenstein, Hochgehträumt connects the castle and the cave on a circular route.
Zwiefalten is also a cultural destination in the wider Reutlingen area. The Minster of Our Lady is at the heart of the historic monastic and pilgrimage town of Zwiefalten and is one of the most significant examples of German Late Baroque architecture. Minster concerts are held there every year, but the dates vary. If a concert affects your travel dates, check the specific dates in advance.
In Münsingen, the Swabian Alb Biosphere Centre presents information about the nature, landscape and people of the Swabian Alb Biosphere Area through interactive displays as well as audio and video features. Münsingen’s Old Castle houses the Castle Town Museum, which presents the history and culture of the Münsingen Alb. You can choose between a focus on nature and landscape and a regional history museum.
The Biosphere Centre’s educational group activities include felting, planting together, harvesting and cooking. Programme details may change; check the current offerings if you are planning one of these activities. At the former Münsingen military training area, trained TrÜP guides take visitors on individual tours or lead groups with other visitors on specific dates throughout the year. Dates and booking arrangements may change; check these details before planning a guided tour.
