Zwiefalten brings together a landmark cultural site and a range of opportunities for cycling and hiking. The Minster of Our Lady is a testament to late Baroque architecture; cycling routes also lead to Zwiefalten, and mountain bike tours start in town. Zwiefalten can also be reached on foot via several long-distance hiking trails. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping these topics separate: visits to the minster are subject to fixed rules, while the trails differ in their starting points, routes and lengths.
Minster, Monastic History and Museum
The Minster of Our Lady in Zwiefalten is one of the most significant buildings of the German late Baroque. Until 1803, it was the abbey church of Zwiefalten Benedictine Abbey; since 1812, it has served as a parish and pilgrimage church. This sequence places the building in the context of both its monastic history and its later religious function. Tours must be booked in advance and may only be conducted by authorized minster guides from the Catholic parish; self-guided tours are not permitted. If you are planning a minster tour, allow for the required advance booking.
The First Württemberg Psychiatric Museum is housed in a former cemetery chapel and offers insights into the development of psychiatric care. Another focus of cultural history is the collection of plans by Zwiefalten monastery master builders Joseph Benedikt Schneider (1689–1763) and Hans Martin Schneider (1692–1768), a rare testament to the South German Baroque. These two subjects offer distinct perspectives: the development of psychiatric care and the South German Baroque period.
Cycling Routes with Different Courses
Three types of cycling routes can be distinguished by their descriptions. Zwiefalten lies on the Danube Cycle Path section between Sigmaringen and Ulm. The Zwiefalter Alb Cycle Route (R2) is signposted from the car park by the Stationsgaststätte and runs via Kleinengstingen, Bernloch, Ödenwaldstetten, Aichelau, Aichstetten, Tigerfeld and Gauingen, as well as through the Gossenzuger Valley to Zwiefalten. Eight mountain bike tours also start in Zwiefalten, heading in all four cardinal directions. The Danube Cycle Path description names the towns along the section, the R2 description gives the route via individual villages, and the mountain biking offer specifies the number and directions of the tours. Check the information about the eight mountain bike tours before setting out.
Hiking: Trail Lengths and Long-Distance Routes
For hiking, trail length provides a concrete basis for comparison: the certified premium hiking trail “hochgehpilgert” is 13.2 km long; there are five well-maintained circular hiking trails around Zwiefalten, ranging from 5.5 to 13.5 km. The length of “hochgehpilgert” therefore falls within the range of the circular trails. Zwiefalten can also be reached on foot via the Black Forest–Swabian Alb–Allgäu Trail (HW 5), the Swabian Alb Southern Edge Trail (HW 2), the Swabian Alb–Upper Swabia Trail (HW 7) and the Reutlingen–Zwiefalten Castle Trail. Distances help you compare the length of the hikes, while trail names help you find your way around the long-distance trail network. Check the latest information about the circular trails, as well as HW 2, HW 7 and the Castle Trail, before setting out.
