Hülben offers several options for planning excursions: the six-kilometer Celtic Experience Trail runs through the Late Celtic oppidum of Heidengraben, while hiking routes along the Alb escarpment offer views across the valley. There are also trails to Hohenneuffen Castle and a cave with a remarkable discovery story. This lets you choose between a themed route, scenic hikes, and destinations to explore independently.

The Celtic Experience Trail and routes along the Alb escarpment

The six-kilometer Celtic Experience Trail runs through the Late Celtic oppidum of Heidengraben. You can explore the trail using a free multimedia app. Its length and theme give the route a clear focus: the Late Celtic oppidum and how it is presented through the app are at its heart.

For hikes, there are routes from Hülben along the Alb escarpment, offering views across the valley. Other hiking routes lead to Hohenneuffen Castle. This gives you different destinations to choose from: a route along the Alb escarpment with views of the valley, or a hike to the castle as a named destination.

A cave with a story of discovery

At the entrance to Hülben from the direction of Bad Urach, a stalactite cave lies directly beneath State Road 250. It was discovered in September 1978 during road construction. Where and how it was discovered make the cave a distinctive chapter in Hülben’s history. Even if hiking is the main focus of your trip, this story of discovery adds another local dimension to the town’s landscape and archaeological themes.

Hülben also has a motor and glider airfield. Outside the town, about 500 meters away and surrounded by greenery, is Dürrlau playground. Its facilities include a climbing frame, a double swing, two spring riders, a seesaw, and a playhouse. There is also a play structure with a slide, a sliding pole, and a suspension bridge, as well as balance beams, adjacent bushes and hedges, and a barbecue area. The playground is therefore a specific destination nearby, but it is outside Hülben.

More destinations in the Reutlingen district

Other places in the Reutlingen district also offer distinctive cultural and natural attractions. In Zwiefalten, the Minster of Our Lady is at the heart of the old monastery and pilgrimage town. It is one of the most significant examples of late Baroque architecture in the German tradition. Minster concerts take place there every year; dates vary. If you would like to combine your visit with a concert, check the event dates in advance.

Lichtenstein Castle was built from 1840 to 1842 on the foundations of an older knights’ castle. From the castle, the Hochgehträumt circular hiking trail runs along striking scenic cliffs directly to Nebelhöhle Cave. One important point for getting to the castle: public transport does not go directly there. The nearest bus stops are in Unterhausen at Oberhausener Steige, in Honau, and in Traifelberg; from there, you can hike to the castle. Check the current connections before setting out, as public transport services may change.

In Münsingen, the Swabian Alb Biosphere Center offers insights into the nature, landscape, and people of the biosphere area through interactive exhibits and audio and video contributions. The Old Castle houses the Castle City Museum, which presents the history and culture of the Münsingen Alb. The Biosphere Center’s educational group activities include felting, planting, harvesting, and cooking together. On the former Münsingen military training area, trained TrÜP guides take visitors on individual tours or lead groups together with other visitors on specific dates throughout the year. If you are planning a group activity or guided tour, check the relevant dates and program details in advance.
