Explore Hohenstein in several ways: on foot along circular trails and nature paths, on one of two mountain biking tours, or on a relatively flat cycling and inline skating route. There are also the castle ruins near Oberstetten and the Hans-Reyhing-Stube in Bernloch. When planning a stay, you can choose between getting active in the countryside and focusing on history.

Exploring on foot and in winter

Various circular trails lead through Hohenstein’s districts and the surrounding area. Two routes have their own particular focus: the nature discovery trail runs partly through the Bauenhofen/Häulesrain nature reserve. The health hiking trail leads to Ödenwaldstetten and invites you to experience the landscape, fauna, flora, trail conditions and views with all your senses. You can plan your walks and hikes according to whether you mainly want to explore the surrounding area or consciously take in the different impressions along a trail.

There is also a weather-dependent option in winter: cross-country ski trails are groomed in Hohenstein when there is enough snow. If cross-country skiing is important to your trip, check the snow conditions beforehand; this activity depends on them.

Cycling routes with different profiles

The “Around Hohenstein” tour is 30 kilometers long and relatively flat. It can be completed by bicycle or inline skates. According to the tour description, it is well suited to families. This loop therefore differs from the two mountain biking tours in both terrain and ways of getting around.

The challenging West mountain biking tour is 32.3 kilometers long, with around 450 meters of elevation gain. It starts at Brechhölze in Bernloch. Highlights include Dachenstein, Hohenstein Castle Ruins, the Maßhalderbuch estate and the Oberstetter Valley. If you choose this tour, you can take its length, elevation gain and the named stops into account when planning.

The East mountain biking tour is a 24-kilometer route with 390 meters of elevation gain. It leads from the farmhouse museum in Ă–denwaldstetten via Schachen into the Lauter Valley and on to Wasserstetten; the described route therefore extends beyond Hohenstein. A shorter alternative goes through the Amseltal instead of via Schachen. This route thus offers an additional choice between the section via Schachen and the shortcut through the Amseltal.

The three routes offer different points of comparison: the relatively flat loop, the explicitly challenging West tour and the East tour with its Amseltal shortcut. The distances and elevation gains give an idea of the scope of the two mountain biking tours; the routes also differ in their course and ways of getting around.

Castle ruins and local history

Hohenstein Castle Ruins stand near Oberstetten in a forest among moss-covered boulders and gnarled trees. The grounds have an observation platform and a barbecue area. Along with its forest setting, the ruins therefore offer two specific places to visit.

The Hans-Reyhing-Stube in Bernloch provides another link to local history. It was established in 1985 in memory of Bernloch’s local poet Hans Reyhing. Together with the castle ruins, it complements the trails and cycling tours with two different local themes: the site of a former castle and a memorial to a local poet.

Plan your stay around your own interests

When looking for hotels in Hohenstein, you can first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: circular trails and nature paths, one of the three cycling routes, or the historic sites. For cross-country skiing, sufficient snow cover is essential. The different route details and trail themes can help you organize your plans for your stay without treating all the activities as one single route.
