There is an extensive network of hiking and cycling trails around Mehrstetten. It is complemented by the Greut hedge nature trail and a seasonal network of cross-country ski trails. If you are considering Mehrstetten as a destination, you can choose what to focus on: getting around on foot or by bike, a nature-related topic or winter sports. The various activities offer different focal points, making it easy to match them to your interests.

Hiking Trails, Cycling and Nature

The regional Hommeler hiking trails run through the Schandental and Böttental valleys. They are marked with the county’s standard signage. Before setting out on a specific hike, it is worth checking current trail conditions, as they can change. If you are interested in the Hommeler trails, these two named areas provide a starting point for planning.

The Greut hedge nature trail in Mehrstetten-Greut focuses on native trees and shrubs and on hedges as a habitat. Thirty-five small information boards provide details on these subjects. Here, the focus is not only on getting around, but also on learning about nature. If you are particularly interested in woody plants and hedges as a habitat, the trail offers a distinct focus alongside the hiking and cycling network.

A Seasonal Focus in Winter

Mehrstetten has a well-maintained network of cross-country ski trails. It adds a seasonal activity to the options for hiking and cycling. Snow and trail preparation depend on the season, so check current conditions before setting out. This lets you include cross-country skiing as a distinct part of your travel plans without treating it as equivalent to the less season-dependent hiking and cycling activities.

More to Discover in the Wider Reutlingen Destination

The wider Reutlingen destination also offers distinctive cultural and nature-related attractions. In Zwiefalten, the Minster of Our Lady is the focal point of the historic monastery and pilgrimage town and is one of the most significant examples of German Late Baroque architecture. Concerts are held in the minster every year; dates vary. As another regional point of reference, 15 of the hochgehberge hiking routes run through Reutlingen County.

Lichtenstein Castle was built from 1840 to 1842 on the foundations of an older knight’s castle. The Hochgehträumt circular hiking trail leads from the castle along impressive scenic cliffs directly to Nebelhöhle Cave. Public transport does not run directly to the castle. The nearest bus stops are in Unterhausen at Oberhausener Steige, in Honau and in Traifelberg; from there, you can hike to the castle. As connections may change, it is advisable to check current travel options in advance.

In Münsingen, the Swabian Alb Biosphere Centre shares information about the biosphere area’s nature, landscape and people through interactive exhibits and audio and video presentations. The Old Castle also houses the Münsingen Town Museum, which presents the history and culture of the Münsinger Alb. Educational group activities at the Biosphere Centre include felt-making and planting, harvesting and cooking together; programme details may change.

At the former Münsingen military training area, trained TrÜP guides take visitors on individual tours or lead groups of visitors on selected dates throughout the year. Dates and booking arrangements may change, so check them before planning. These guided tours offer a different focus from the trails around Mehrstetten and are another way to explore the wider Reutlingen destination.
