In Römerstein, reasons to visit range from snow-dependent downhill runs and cross-country ski trails to viewpoints, hiking landscapes and local cultural attractions. When planning, it is worth keeping the different highlights and conditions in mind: some activities depend on snow conditions, while others focus on the landscape and history of the towns.

Skiing, Tobogganing and Cross-Country Skiing

The Donnstetten ski area has three family-friendly runs, each 365 metres long. Four drag lifts take skiers to an altitude of 850 metres above sea level. The facilities operate seasonally and depend on snow conditions.

Several clubs offer ski lessons at the Donnstetten ski lift. Lessons must be booked directly with the relevant club; club offerings and booking options may change. Tobogganing is also possible on all ski slopes in Römerstein, provided seasonal snow conditions allow it. Skiing, lessons and tobogganing therefore all depend on the same essential requirement: sufficient snow.

Römerstein has more than 60 kilometres of interconnected cross-country ski trails. These can be combined to create your own circular routes. The Donnstetten trail starts at the Donnstetten ski lift, is twelve kilometres long and connects to the Alb-Bad trail in Westerheim. While the network’s length offers scope for creating your own circular routes, the Donnstetten trail provides a clearly measured route option. Check local notices for current trail conditions before setting out.

Tower, Views and Landscape

Römerstein Tower is the landmark of Römerstein. It is located between Böhringen and Donnstetten at an altitude of 874 metres and was built in 1912 by the Swabian Alb Association on the highest elevation of the Central Swabian Alb. Its timber-clad structure stands on a solid base level. The tower offers panoramic views across the Swabian Alb; its design and location give it distinct qualities: it is both a structure with a clearly established date and a striking feature in the landscape.

The “Römerstein Tower – A View of the Whole” hike passes through varied landscapes featuring karst terrain and mustard-coloured meadows. Its scenery can look different depending on the season. Another striking feature is Kanzel, located on a slope edge: this limestone formation, bordered by beech trees, combines views of a rocky landscape with distinctive geology. Hasenhäusle Hill, south of the Aussiedlerhof farm, offers views of the Alb village of Donnstetten. Each viewpoint and the hike have their own highlights.

Donnstetten itself lies in a maar, a volcanic basin. If you include the Römerstein circular route in your plans, you can use its measurements as a guide: it is 20 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 200 metres, and starts and ends at the car park of the sports and festival hall in Böhringen.

Local History and Other Experiences

The local history museum in Donnstetten shows how people lived and worked around 1900. Zainingen offers further cultural and historical attractions: a large Hüle, or village pond, a late medieval fortified church and a group of burial mounds from the Hallstatt period. These places and historical remains complement the landscape with a range of historical periods, from the Hallstatt period to everyday life around 1900.

The Donnstetten summer bobsleigh run offers a different kind of experience. Passengers can control their own speed using side brake levers. Operating conditions and dates may vary; check them before visiting. This makes it easy to distinguish the attraction from snow-dependent winter activities without assuming that the same conditions apply to both.
