From the Peace Linden in Kohlstetten, declared a natural monument in 1940, to Kleinengstingen’s Rococo floral arrangements, Engstingen’s local highlights range from natural history to architecture. For winter sports, the Kohltal cross-country ski trail offers two possible starting points. The Swabian Alb Railway provides another reference point for planning your journey.

Local highlights in Engstingen

In Engstingen’s Kohlstetten district, the Kohlstetten Peace Linden was declared a natural monument on March 21, 1940. The exact date and protected status give the tree a special local significance for anyone interested in natural monuments or the history of the area.

The Engstingen Kohltal cross-country ski trail starts either at the Kohltal lift or the Weinberg lift. If you’re planning to go cross-country skiing, consider these two possible starting points when planning your route. They offer a specific winter alternative to the area’s historical highlights.

Two buildings with distinct historical features are in the spotlight in Kleinengstingen. The well house at the Kleinengstingen Sauerbrunnen was built from Honau tufa in 1938 and remains unchanged to this day. Its construction date and material give the well house a clear connection to local architectural history. During the most recent renovation of St. Blaise’s Church, two dozen of the approximately 200 different Rococo floral arrangements on the ceiling and gallery were made visible again. They date from the building’s construction in 1770. Thus, the well house’s building material and the church’s newly visible decoration are the respective highlights.

The Swabian Alb Railway runs from Gammertingen via Trochtelfingen and Engstingen toward MĂĽnsingen. Check the current timetable for specific departure times and connections, as train service details can change. Elsewhere in the region, bicycles are carried free of charge on all regular Swabian Alb Railway trains. Check the current conditions for taking a bicycle on board before you travel.

More to explore in the wider Reutlingen destination

In the wider Reutlingen destination, the Minster of Our Lady is a highlight of Zwiefalten, an old monastic and pilgrimage town. It is one of the most significant examples of German Late Baroque architecture. Minster concerts are held there every year; dates vary. The Reutlingen district is also home to 15 hiking routes in the hochgehberge trail network. The routes may be revised over time.

Lichtenstein Castle was built from 1840 to 1842 on the foundations of an older knight’s castle. The Hochgehträumt circular hiking trail leads from the castle along impressive cliffs with panoramic views directly to Nebelhöhle Cave. Public transport does not go directly to the castle. The nearest bus stops are in Unterhausen (Oberhausener Steige), Honau and Traifelberg; from there, you can hike to the castle. Check current connections in advance, as public transport services may change.

In MĂĽnsingen, the Swabian Alb Biosphere Center uses interactive exhibits as well as audio and video features to share information about the nature, landscape and people of the biosphere area. The Old Castle houses the town museum, which presents the history and culture of the MĂĽnsingen Alb. Educational group activities at the Biosphere Center include felting, planting, harvesting and cooking together; program details may change. At the former MĂĽnsingen military training area, trained TrĂśP guides take visitors on individual tours or lead groups of visitors on specific dates throughout the year. Dates and booking arrangements may change.
