Two clear themes are ideal for planning a trip to Trochtelfingen: historic buildings and hiking trails. Routes range from the 4.1-kilometre Augstberg circular trail to the almost 16-kilometre Kuppenalb Loop; cultural attractions range from the parish church to the Museum at the High Tower.
Churches, Towers and Chapels
Several different construction periods can be identified at the Catholic parish church of St. Martin: parts of its tower date from the 12th and 15th centuries, the rectangular choir dates from after 1322, and the nave was built around 1450. Anyone interested in architectural history can compare the different dates in a single building here.
The castle of the Counts of Werdenberg was probably built between 1488 and 1497. The High Tower is one of Trochtelfingen’s most prominent buildings and can be seen behind the town wall. The Powder Tower is a small, preserved round tower on the western side of Trochtelfingen.
Hennenstein Chapel, also known as HĂĽnenstein Chapel, preserves frescoes that are now only partially intact. A preserved hermitage is also part of the chapel. Together, these buildings and historic traces add to the options for anyone who wants to focus on architecture and culture during their stay.
Museum at the High Tower
The Museum at the High Tower features a permanent exhibition of original documents, objects, pictures and photographs. The museum is generally open twice a month, from 2 to 5 p.m.; admission is free. Check the current opening dates before your visit.
Hikes of Different Lengths
The Augstberg circular trail is an easy 4.1-kilometre hike, with an estimated duration of about an hour and a half. The Kuppenalb Loop is considerably longer, at almost 16 kilometres. It combines Trochtelfingen’s picturesque half-timbered houses with views from the Augstberg and the natural scenery at Neuban.
The Lauchertsee-Hausen Loop is just over 8 kilometres long; in good weather, views extend as far as the Swiss Alps. The Lauchertsee-Neuban Loop is just under 8 kilometres. It crosses the plateau of Mägerkingen’s local mountain, fringed by juniper heathland protected under nature conservation laws. The two loops therefore differ not only in length but also in the landscapes described.
Those who want to explore the landscape beyond the historic town centre can find meadows, fields and woodland on the Städtles Loop. Trochtelfingen is also on the Albtrauf mountain bike trail. The ALB-GOLD Visitor Centre provides a starting point for planning hiking and cycling tours.
Guided Tour, Tastings and Lauchertsee
At the ALB-GOLD Visitor Centre, an informative guided tour explains how pasta and Spätzle are made. Visitors can try both, and selected products are available to buy on site. As well as exploring the buildings and hiking trails, you can also learn about how these foods are made.
There is a barbecue area and a playground at Lauchertsee. Swimming in the lake is not permitted. Bear this restriction in mind when deciding whether to include a visit to the lake in your plans.
