Three circular trails, a cycle route along the Rems and several cultural attractions give a break in Winterbach a range of different focuses. Specific route lengths and starting points can help you make your choice; in the village, the museum, historic town centre and outdoor activities round out the programme.
Circular Trails and Cycle Route: Different Scales
The “Wildes Lehenbachtal” circular trail is 7.1 kilometres long and starts at Winterbach outdoor swimming pool. The 6-kilometre “Engelberger Panoramaweg” starts at Winterbach railway station. At 5.6 kilometres, the “Wein- und Obstwanderweg” circular trail is the shortest of the three; it combines a hike with the themes of winegrowing and orchards that are typical of Winterbach and the Rems Valley. This lets you compare the circular trails by length and, for the first two, also take their stated starting points into account.
The Remstal Cycle Route is on a different scale: it is around 106 kilometres long and follows the renaturalised Rems through Winterbach. This figure refers to the entire cycle route, while the three hiking trails are described as shorter circular routes with their own starting points. Whether you choose hiking or cycling, you’ll find different options: short circular trails or a longer route that follows the Rems through Winterbach.
Museum, Crafts and Historic Town Centre
The Winterbach Village and Local History Museum is housed in a building dating from 1776. It illustrates the layout of a typical local farmhouse, where living quarters, livestock and food stores were all under one roof. The museum also includes the former Hafner pottery kiln, a few metres west of the museum. It was renovated in 1995/96. The kiln displays pottery made by Hafner potters; a potter’s wheel is set up and in use. This offers a look at everything from the layout of a farmhouse to the products and tools of the pottery trade.
Winterbach’s historic town centre includes St Michael’s Church, the Neptune Fountain on the market square and three town halls. These landmarks provide clear points of reference for a walk focused on local history and architecture. The Winterbach Cultural Association’s annual programme adds visual arts, crafts, theatre, music and literature to the cultural offering. Play Areas and Open Spaces
On the Rems riverbank at Gleisdorfer Platz, children will find driftwood play equipment and a field of water fountains. Hindererstein, a public barbecue and playground, is car-free, at the edge of the woods in Lehenbachtal and near the reservoir. The two places offer different things: at Gleisdorfer Platz, play and water take centre stage by the Rems, while Hindererstein combines a barbecue and playground with its woodland setting. These open spaces complement the hiking and cultural activities with places to spend time outdoors.
More Options in the Wider Rems-Murr District Destination
Winterbach is part of the wider Rems-Murr district destination. The 50-kilometre Rems-Murr hiking trail is a separate regional hiking option: it can be walked in three stages from Endersbach via Winnenden to Murrhardt. Route navigation can be downloaded to a smartphone. The towns along the stages provide a distinct framework for planning a hike in the region.
The seasonal Limesbus Nord, route 372, is another regional option. From May until the penultimate Sunday in October, it runs on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from Murrhardt via Grab and GroĂźerlach to Mainhardt and back. The bus makes it possible to hike sections of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Limes or take part in guided tours led by Limes-Cicerones. Check the current operating days before travelling.
