In Winnenden, several different highlights come together for a stay: the Evangelical Castle Church combines an oldest section dating from around 850, during the time of Louis the Pious, with the carved St James Altar from 1520. Winnental Castle, the historic castle park and WUNNEBAD complement the area’s cultural history with park walks and swimming options. When planning, you can decide whether architectural history, time outdoors or swimming will shape your stay.

Cultural History in Winnenden

Winnental Castle was built in the 15th century by the Teutonic Knights based there as the seat of the Winnenden commandery. In front of the castle, between the gatehouse and the main building, stands a stone-carved pug monument. These two details offer different points of interest in the castle grounds: the building’s history recalls the commandery, while the monument, with its clearly specified location and material, offers a subject of its own.

The Evangelical Castle Church is Gothic and has three naves. It houses the carved St James Altar from 1520, which attracts many visitors interested in art each year. Its oldest section dates from around 850, during the time of Louis the Pious. The same church therefore brings together distinctly different dates: the early section and the altar from the 16th century. Those interested in architectural history or woodcarving will find two different points of interest here.

Castle Park and WUNNEBAD

Winnenden’s historic castle park covers 18 hectares and is open to everyone. Its features include valuable old trees and near-natural habitats for native animals and plants. The park invites you to take a break by the lake or walk through its extensive grounds. It offers a different way to spend time in Winnenden from exploring the church, castle and monument: here, the focus is on the park landscape and paths through the grounds.

WUNNEBAD comprises a large outdoor pool, a modern indoor pool, and a sauna and wellness area. If you would like to include swimming, a sauna or wellness alongside cultural attractions, it offers another specific option for your stay. The different areas serve different purposes; check the current operating details before planning a visit, as they may change.

Bus Connections and Regional Routes

There is a central bus station at Winnenden railway station. From there, various bus routes serve all the town’s districts and destinations in central Winnenden. The Rems-Murr hiking trail also offers a regional perspective on the wider destination of Rems-Murr District. The trail is 50 kilometres long and can be hiked in three stages from Endersbach via Winnenden to Murrhardt. The entire trail is well served by local public transport, so you do not need a car to get there. Route navigation can be downloaded to a smartphone. The length, number of stages and digital navigation provide useful guidance if you would like to include a longer hike in your travel plans. Check current connections before setting out, as transport services may change.

A separate seasonal option in Rems-Murr District is the Limesbus Nord, route 372. From May until the penultimate Sunday in October, it runs from Murrhardt via Grab and GroĂźerlach to Mainhardt and back on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. You can use the bus to hike to sites along the UNESCO World Heritage Limes or attend tours led by Limes Cicerones.
