The 2.7 km-long Fruit and Tree Trail in Bretzenacker is home to around 200 different fruit tree and woody plant species to discover. The trail offers a specific focus on nature: it highlights a range of species and a clearly defined theme for a walk. Berglen itself is characterised by meadows, fruit trees, forests and fields.
Walks and hikes in Berglen
Walking and hiking trails in Berglen and the surrounding area offer opportunities to explore the landscape in every season. In spring 2018, the municipality marked six new circular hiking trails with the Naturpark’s standardised trail signage. When choosing a hike, you can distinguish between different local routes and the Fruit and Tree Trail, which has a special theme.
There are also opportunities for ski touring and cross-country skiing in Berglen and the surrounding area during the colder months. These activities add further seasonal options to the walking and hiking trails. If you plan to take part, check the conditions before setting out.
Discover trees and orchids
The tree garden is located at the edge of the forest in Hößlinswart. It was established in 1982 and has since been redesigned by BUND and the Hößlinswart Fruit and Horticultural Association. Almost all the tree and shrub species that grow wild here can be seen there. While the trail in Bretzenacker offers around 200 different fruit tree and woody plant species to discover, the garden focuses on the wild-growing trees and shrubs found locally.
The Sommerrain nature reserve offers a seasonal opportunity to observe nature: it is located not far from the starting point of the Königsbronn circular trail. Native orchid species grow there and flower at different times of the year. If seeing them in bloom is important to your visit, plan your observation around the season.
Local history and practical information
The Berglen Local History Museum is in Oppelsbohm. Through selected objects, it presents former living conditions and key economic developments in Berglen. The local history adds a perspective on life and economic change in the municipality to the nature and hiking themes.
In spring 2020, the municipality of Berglen, together with the Federal Association for Self-Help for People with Disabilities (Bundesverband Selbsthilfe Körperbehinderter e. V.), the Rems-Murr District Youth Council (Kreisjugendring Rems-Murr e. V.) and the Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park, initiated one of the first wheelchair-accessible hiking trails in the nature park area. If you are planning to use this trail, check its current availability and accessibility in advance.
Several benches in Ă–dernhardt offer views and a place to pause in nature. Ă–dernhardt also has a barrier-free bus stop near the hiking trail. Check the current bus connections before travelling.
