The Ebnisee lies in a valley between Ebni and Kaisersbach. Its surface area is around 6.7 hectares, and it is up to about five metres deep. It is mainly fed by the Sommerbach, which flows in at the north shore. Around the lake, a lakeside path and activities on the water meet nature and cultural themes that you can take into account when planning your time in Ebni.

At the Ebnisee: Lakeside Path, Swimming and Boating

The path around the Ebnisee is about 1.7 kilometres long and almost flat. On the east side, it is paved; apart from a slight incline, it is easy to navigate with a pushchair or wheelchair. This makes the short circuit by the water different from the hike in the footsteps of the Limes, which has its own theme and a different route.

The Ebnisee is used as a swimming lake. You can stroll along the shore, relax on the sunbathing lawns and use the designated barbecue areas. In summer, pedal boats and rowing boats are also available. Whether boat trips are offered during your visit may depend on conditions, so check availability in advance. Swimming, a walk along the shore and a break on the sunbathing lawn offer different ways to spend your time without requiring you to plan a longer hike.

Nature Trails and Limes History

The natural monument “Gallengrotte” is located near the Ebnisee. A scenic, romantic trail leads there from the lake’s north shore. Conditions on the trail may change depending on its state, so bear this in mind when choosing your route.

The hike “From the Ebnisee to the Limes World Heritage Site” offers a different perspective. It partly follows the old border rampart and passes the remains of watchtowers and a former small fort. Several information panels along the route offer insights into Roman life on the border with Germania. At the Ebnisee, a short path around the water and a hike featuring Roman history are therefore two different options.

The Lake’s History and the Name

The Ebnisee was first dammed in the winter of 1745/1746; it has been permanently dammed since 1884. Modest tourism around the lake began after that and, over the following decades, developed into a popular local recreation destination. The name Ebni may also have a historical connection: it is probably linked to medieval glassmaking and may derive from the flattening of glass initially blown into a hollow shape. This interpretation is a possibility, not a confirmed explanation.

More Places to Visit in Kaisersbach

The wider destination of Kaisersbach also includes Hägelesklinge and Brunnenklinge. The two gorges lie between the Kaisersbach districts of Ebersberg and Täle and have been a nature reserve since 1969. They offer a different landscape experience from the Ebnisee.

For those interested in cultural history, Kaisersbach also has two mills dating from the 14th century. Menzlesmühle lies in the east of the municipality on the mill hiking trail and has an overshot waterwheel. Ebersberger Mühle is located in the Täle of the Blinden Rot; since the 1920s, it has been powered by a turbine. These destinations complement Limes history with further insights into regional architectural and technological history.
