Castle history and cycling routes give a stay in Liel two different points of focus. The town’s history leads to two landmarks: the Baroque castle and the original seat of the Lords of Baden zu Liel, a vanished moated castle below the church. For cycling, you can choose between a loop of about 20 kilometres and a longer tour that can optionally continue along the Old Rhine. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Liel, you can tailor your search to whether history or cycling will play a greater role in your stay.

Liel Castle: Baroque architecture and former seat of power

Liel Castle was built in the Baroque style around 1750. The former estate included a park and several distinct buildings: the cavalier’s house, an agricultural building, a small Baroque theatre and the former town hall. The former complex therefore comprised more than just the castle; the grounds, as well as agricultural, cultural and civic buildings, were also part of the estate. The small theatre and the town hall offer separate insights into the diversity of the former castle estate.

The moated castle below the church is a separate site. It was the original seat of the Lords of Baden zu Liel and has disappeared. The Baroque castle, built around 1750, and the moated castle are therefore two distinct landmarks in the town’s history: the moated castle represents the original seat of power, while the castle represents the later Baroque building history. When putting Liel’s history into context, you can keep this sequence in mind without conflating the two sites.

Cycling: a loop or a longer route

A cycling loop runs from Schliengen through Liel via Eggener StraĂźe and Alte StraĂźe, continuing to Niedereggenen, Obereggenen, Feldberg and Mauchen. The loop is about 20 kilometres long. This distance refers to the entire loop; the two named roads mark the section through Liel. This makes it possible to assess this option by its approximate length and the route described. After passing through the places listed, the loop returns to its starting point in Schliengen.

A longer cycling tour connects Schliengen with Liel, Riedlingen, Holzen, Egringen and Efringen-Kirchen. An optional extension takes the route along the Old Rhine to Steinenstadt. This gives you two different route options: a loop with an approximate total distance or a longer route that can be extended with the section to Steinenstadt. The extension is optional and is not a necessary part of the longer route.

To decide, compare the desired route length and the possible extension: around 20 kilometres for one option, or a longer route with an optional section along the Old Rhine for the other. Route details may change, so check the route before setting off.
