Rümmingen offers different perspectives for a stay: hiking trails through vineyards and over hilltops, local history around St. James’ Church, and the historic Kandertal Railway. When planning, it is worth distinguishing hikes near Rümmingen from the region’s longer routes. Check trail conditions as well as the railway’s operating days and journey times in advance.
Wine Trails and Views
Rümmingen is surrounded by Wii-Wegli routes that pass through vineyards and offer views of the Rhine Valley and the Vosges in neighboring Alsace. Hikes over hilltops also open up panoramas of the Kandertal, the Basel region and the Vosges. The trails around the town therefore offer a range of landscape perspectives.
The Markgräfler Wii-Wegli is a network of wine hiking trails stretching more than 92 kilometers between Grenzach-Wyhlen, Weil am Rhein and Freiburg im Breisgau. Its regional scale sets the network apart from individual hikes over the hilltops near Rümmingen. Along the Wii-Wegli, inns, garden restaurants and seasonal wine taverns serve regional wines and food. As individual establishments and their opening arrangements may change, it is best to check specific plans for stopping along the way in advance.
St. James’ Church and Local History
The Markgräflerland section of the Himmelreich Way of St. James passes through vineyards and orchards directly to Rümmingen’s village square. The small St. James’ Church stands there. In the early 16th century, it served as a pilgrimage church dedicated to St. James. If you would like to see inside, check access before your visit, as it may vary.
The chronology gives the town a long historical perspective: Rümmingen was first mentioned in 767 under the name Romaninchova. In 1505, residents built a chapel for the village; in 2005, the Protestant parish celebrated the 500th anniversary of St. James’ Church. These dates mark different periods in the town’s history, from its early mention to later church tradition.
The Hebel Hiking Trail offers a literary perspective. Information panels with images and text introduce J. P. Hebel; the trail also passes historic buildings and sites associated with his poems and life. The route is approximately 60 kilometers long and runs from the source of the Wiese River on the Feldberg to Basel. It is therefore a long-distance hiking route, and you should check its course before setting out. The western variant of the last two stages of the Westweg also runs from the Markgräflerland through the Kandertal to Basel.
Kandertal Railway, Events and Recreation
The historic Kandertal Railway is a 13-kilometer steam railway running from Haltingen through the Kandertal to Kandern. Rümmingen is a stop at railway kilometer 4.5. You can board at the station on Schallbacher Straße. As operating days and timetables may vary, check in advance for a date that fits your plans.
Cultural events can also shape your stay: Kulturo Rümmingen organizes the recurring “Culture in the Chapel” series, featuring concerts, theater and cabaret in the chapel. Individual programs may change, so check event dates if you would like to plan your visit around them. The municipal sports facilities on Schallbacher Straße also include a beach volleyball court. Check its current availability before using it.
