Rheinfelden (Baden) can be explored from several perspectives: border history on the Rhine, an accessible stream cave and viewpoints connected to hiking trails each offer a different focus. This variety is also helpful when planning a stay: you can decide whether culture, a cave visit, a walk with puzzles or an excursion to the Dinkelberg should take priority for you.

Border Markers and House History on the Rhine

At the Rheinfelden Rhine Bridge, a border stone divided in two is built into the parapet at the border line. It bears the Baden and Aargau coats of arms and dates from 1810. This dated border marker makes the history of the river visible through a specific detail.

Another historical highlight is Haus Salmegg, one of the oldest houses in Rheinfelden (Baden), right on the Rhine. The gallery in the house hosts changing special exhibitions. The border stone and the house therefore offer culture-minded travellers different points of interest to choose from: a specific border marker from 1810 or a historic building with a changing exhibition programme.

Tschamberhöhle and Paths along the Rhine

The Tschamberhöhle is a stream cave in shell limestone. It lies right on the banks of the Rhine in the Rheinfelden district of Karsau-Riedmatt. More than 500 metres of the cave are open to visitors, who explore underground watercourses, wide and narrow passages, chambers and gorges wearing a helmet and carrying a torch. The changes between the different interior formations are part of the cave experience, as is its location in shell limestone.

Rheinfelden (Baden) has three railway stations on the Hochrhein railway line between Basel and Singen. To reach the Tschamberhöhle, a signposted footpath follows the Rhine from the “Beuggen” stop; the walk takes just under 20 minutes. If you are planning a cave visit, you can use this approximate walking time as a guide.

The Rheinfelden Rhine Riverside Rally adds discovery tasks and puzzles to a walk. The map is available from the Tourist Information office or as a download. Alongside exploring the cave, this offers another way to discover the Rhine riverfront.

Viewpoints and Hiking Destinations

Eigenturm stands at 523 m above sea level above the High Rhine Valley and offers sweeping views over Rheinfelden and into Switzerland. It is right on the Westweg trail and is a destination on many local circular hikes. At Eigenturm, the focus is on views and hiking; at the Tschamberhöhle, by contrast, it is on underground watercourses and cave formations.

Rheinfelden (Baden) is part of the Southern Black Forest Nature Park. In the district of Eichsel, St. Gallus Church stands on the Dinkelberg; its distinctive tower is visible from far away. The Eichsler Umgang takes place on the third Sunday in July in honour of the three virgins Wibrandis, Kunigundis and Mechtundis. After a church service, the shrines containing their relics are carried through the village in a procession, followed by the village festival. If you want to plan your trip around this date, check that year’s programme in advance.
