Schönenberg lies at an elevation of around 700 metres on the sunny southeastern slopes of Belchen. Its open cultural landscape, mountain trails and traces of local history shape the experience of a stay here. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can plan your activities around whether hiking, cycling, winter pursuits or historical discoveries are your priority.

Open Cultural Landscape at Belchen

Steep pastures, sunny slopes and hilltops shape the landscape. Local farms and a landscape conservation association maintain the open cultural landscape. Agricultural land and diverse forests also characterise Schönenberg; parts of these areas lie within a nature reserve or an FFH area. Managed land and woodland are therefore both part of the local scenery.

Hiking and Trails in the Region

The upper Belchen circular trail provides information about the mountain’s flora and fauna. The Weidbuchenpfad on the Stuhlsebene offers a different perspective: it winds through distinctive tree forms and provides views towards the Belchen nature reserve. The two trails are distinguished not by a stated walking time, but by their themes: nature knowledge on one, tree forms and landscape views on the other.

For a wider hiking area, the Black Forest Belchen region offers around 200 kilometres of marked hiking trails. There are also routes for mountain biking, e-biking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. In Schönenberg itself, mountain biking routes include both wide forest roads and narrow trails. The range extends from hiking tours to various cycling and winter sports, without implying one specific fixed route.

Cycling, Snow and Getting Your Bearings

When snow conditions permit, an eight-kilometre freeride descent runs from Belchen down to Schönenberg. It is clearly different from the mountain biking routes: the descent depends on snow, while the cycling routes follow forest roads and narrow trails. Check snow conditions if this descent is one of the reasons for your trip.

It is also important to distinguish between routes when travelling to Belchen: there is no direct car journey from Schönenberg to Belchen. The drive from Schönenberg to the Belchen cable car station goes via Schönau and Aitern. The Belchen gondola provides access towards the summit; from there, the views extend across the Black Forest mountains to the Swiss Jura and the Vosges in France. Before setting out, check the current route and confirm that the gondola is operating.

Local History and Traditional Celebrations

Schönenberg was first documented in 1272. The St. Anthony’s Chapel houses an altar with carved reliefs of saints dating from the early 16th century. Medieval lead and silver mining is also part of the town’s heritage. These subjects offer different perspectives: the chapel draws attention to religious art, while mining reflects the historic use of the landscape.

Traditional local celebrations include the Geisenfest on 1 May and a two-day Father’s Day festival around Ascension Day. As Ascension Day is a movable public holiday, it is worth checking the calendar if you would like to plan your visit around one of the celebrations. The village of Entenschwand, part of Schönenberg, also has a small children’s playground.

A Distinctive Cultural Offering in Lörrach

The wider destination of Lörrach adds its own cultural attractions. The Three Countries Museum has a permanent exhibition covering around 1,000 square metres. The Lörrach Sculpture Trail runs through the city and features 23 sculptures, fountains and monuments created by renowned sculptors. These attractions are associated with Lörrach and complement the picture of Schönenberg’s own landscape and local history.
