In Hohenfels, you can choose different focuses for your trip: the Waltere Moor and lake landscape, hiking trails with marked routes, or cultural events at the Lebensraum-Garten. The history of the castle is also part of the town’s character. Which of these topics interests you most can help guide your plans for a getaway and your choice of accommodation in Hohenfels.

Waltere Moor and Lake Landscape

The Waltere Moor nature reserve lies on the northwestern edge of the Hohenfels district and borders the Schwackenreuter Seen nature reserve. It is situated in a shallow depression at an elevation of about 630 metres above sea level. The area includes wet woodland as well as smaller treeless marsh meadows and dry grassland. These different habitats give a tangible impression of the landscape diversity of the protected area.

The Waltere Moor covers about 95 hectares. Around two thirds lie within the Hohenfels district, with the remainder in the Sauldorf district in the Sigmaringen district. The protected area thus extends beyond the Hohenfels district. At the boundary between MĂĽhlingen and Hohenfels, on the southwestern edge of the lake landscape, an information board and viewing platform offer an overview of the watershed and the lake landscape.

Culture and History in Hohenfels

From 1931 to 2017, a branch of Salem boarding school was housed at Hohenfels Castle. This clearly defined period is part of the castle’s history and provides a historical point of reference alongside the town’s landscape and hiking themes.

A series of events takes place each year during the summer months at the Lebensraum-Garten Hohenfels. The programme includes concerts, readings, themed events and children’s theatre. Events are held in the willow pavilion or outdoors. As individual dates vary, it is worth checking the event schedule for your travel dates. This lets you plan your stay around a cultural event without assuming that a particular programme will be available on a specific day.

Hiking Trails and Landmarks

The Hegau Way of St James crosses the Hohenfels area, passes Sattelöse in Liggersdorf and continues southwest to Mindersdorf. The described route therefore includes several specific place names and a named landmark to help with planning. Check the route details before setting out on a hike.

The Meßkirch–Lake Constance long-distance hiking trail, maintained by the Black Forest Association and the Swabian Alb Association, also runs through Hohenfels; it is marked with a blue diamond. Another hiking route starts at the car park for the Hohenfels natural swimming pool in Kalkofen. At the edge of the forest, you can enjoy a view of Hohenfels Castle and the Hegau landscape. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out.
