In Liggersdorf, a tangible glimpse into Roman times meets several hiking routes. Röschberg represents the archaeological side of the village; trails pass through forest and lake landscapes and lead to notable points in the surrounding area. When planning your trip, it helps to decide whether you want to explore Liggersdorf itself or also include attractions elsewhere in the wider Hohenfels destination.

Roman remains on Röschberg

Among the Roman remains on Röschberg is a farmstead dating from the 1st to the 3rd century AD. The complex comprised a main building, a bathhouse, a temple, outbuildings, hearths and rubbish pits; additional building foundations have also been found. This gives local history a tangible historical focal point. The hiking trails offer a different perspective on the landscape around Liggersdorf.

Hiking trails with different destinations

One variant of a long-distance hiking trail branches off at Liggersdorf cemetery. It leads via Weiherhöfe, Röschberg, Ehrenloh, Stockacker, Liggersdorf municipal forest, Sattelöse and the Waltere Moor nature reserve before joining the Lake Constance–Meßkirch long-distance trail. The route links named places and landscape features with a connection to a longer trail.

A local hiking trail leads through the municipal forest, also known as Eichwald, to the Schwackenreuter Seen lake area and on to a watershed. There, the Mindersdorfer Aach divides towards the Ablach–Danube and Stockacher Aach–Lake Constance river systems. The two route descriptions have different focuses: one lists a sequence of stops and a connection to a long-distance trail, while the other highlights the lake area and watershed. Check trail conditions, waymarking and the route on site before setting out.

Landscape in the wider Hohenfels destination

The Waltere Moor nature reserve lies at the northwestern edge of the Hohenfels municipal area and borders the Schwackenreuter Seen nature reserve. It is situated in a shallow hollow at an elevation of about 630 metres above sea level. The area includes wet swamp forest as well as smaller, open marsh meadows and dry grassland. It covers around 95 hectares; approximately two-thirds lie within Hohenfels, with the remaining area in the Sauldorf municipal area in the Sigmaringen district.

At the southwestern edge of the lake landscape, on the municipal boundary between Mühlingen and Hohenfels, an information board and viewing platform offer an overview of the watershed and the lakes. These sights are part of the wider Hohenfels destination. They complement, but do not replace, Liggersdorf’s local hiking and history attractions.

Trails and culture in Hohenfels

The Hegau Way of St. James passes through the Hohenfels area, skirts Sattelöse in Liggersdorf and heads southwest to Mindersdorf, past St. Laurentius and Oswald parish church, then via the Steig in Deutwang to Ursaul. The Meßkirch–Lake Constance long-distance trail of the Black Forest Association and the Swabian Alb Association is marked with a blue diamond.

The cultural offerings also belong to the wider Hohenfels destination. From 1931 to 2017, a branch of Salem boarding school was housed in Hohenfels Castle. Events are held every year during the summer season at the Hohenfels Lebensraum Garden: concerts, readings, themed events and children’s theatre take place in the willow pavilion or outdoors. If you plan to make an event a fixed part of your trip, check the individual dates.

Hohenfels natural swimming pool is considered the first natural swimming pool in the district of Konstanz and is privately operated by an association. Opening and access may vary by season. Bear this seasonal condition in mind if you plan to visit the pool.
