Coustouge is a circular village of medieval origin. Its central square and picturesque streets shape its appearance. The Église de la Sainte-Vierge fits into this setting: the simple place of worship is Romanesque and dates from the 12th century. Those interested in the history of the village can find points of connection both in its layout and in a specific building.

Church, Museum and Regional History

The Musée de Coustouge displays marine animal fossils from the Jurassic and Eocene. Nine display cases are also devoted to the civilizations that succeeded one another in this part of the Corbières, from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages. The museum thus brings geological and human history together, with an explicitly regional focus. Visits are possible by appointment.

The Maison de l’Ormeau is also part of the village’s cultural life: in 2023, it was described as a cultural and festive center for Coustouge. Coustouge is also on the Corbières and Fitou wine route.

Geology at the Stratigraphic Outcrop

Another way to explore the surrounding area is to visit the stratigraphic outcrop at Coustouge. It is suitable for field trips, where depositional environments of a prodelta area, a delta front and coastal bars can be identified. These technical terms refer to different depositional settings and make the outcrop particularly interesting for anyone who wants to focus on geological formations and how they developed.

The outcrop can be reached via the D323 towards Jonquières. Park the car about 500 meters after leaving the village, before kilometer marker 0.4.

Walking and Cycling Routes

The Albas–Jonquières–Coustouge walking route follows the same path as the Ronde au Cœur des Corbières in the reverse direction as far as Coustouge. The shared route to the village provides a specific point of comparison between the two trails.

A description of the Espace VTT-FFC Corbières-Minervois published in 2019 routes Circuit No. 2, « Entre vignes et moulins », to Coustouge via the D323 after a winding descent from the Bergerie de Poursan. Check the terrain and access conditions before setting out, as the route description reflects conditions at the time it was published.

Fontaine fraîche and Trois Quilles

A route description published in 2024 names Fontaine fraîche as the starting point for the Promenade des Trois Quilles. The fountain lies on the banks of the Robine below Coustouge, beneath tall plane trees in a secluded, quiet and restful spot. A natural spring of clear, cool water flows there all year round. A concrete footbridge over the Robine leads to the fountain.

From the Trois Quilles, the view stretches across Coustouge and its vineyards to Mont Alaric. The Trois Quilles, built of dry stone, are considered evidence of the village’s pastoral past. The view and the construction highlight different aspects: the landscape on one hand, and a reminder of earlier pastoral use on the other.

A description from 2023 recounts Pâquettes, the Easter Monday meal at Fontaine fraîche. Weather permitting, it was the year’s first shared meal outdoors. A large omelet was prepared with wild asparagus and eggs brought by the participants. The exact date may vary from year to year.
