Villeneuve-Les-Corbières can be explored through several specific themes: a trail from the village fountain through the garrigue to the Vierge Récaouffa, the wine-growing history of the Cave Pilote, and the Corbières orientales Natura 2000 bird protection area. At Domaine Lérys, wine tastings and bookable circular trails are also available. This lets you focus on landscape, architectural history or wine. The options differ clearly when planning: for the trails, distance and mode of transport matter; for tastings, reservations are required.
A trail to the Vierge Récaouffa
A trail leads from the village fountain through the garrigue to the Vierge Récaouffa. This sequence makes the choice of route specific: it begins at a named place, passes through a clearly identified landscape and ends at a named destination. Unlike the circular trails at Domaine Lérys, which vary in distance and mode of transport, this trail centres on its connection to the Vierge Récaouffa.
The wine-growing history of the Cave Pilote
The Cave Pilote was designed by Michel Flanzy. It contains truncated-cone-shaped fermentation and wine storage tanks that bear witness to the history of winemaking. The round concrete tanks also tell a story of technical development: they were the first use of this type of tank in a cooperative winery in the Aude department. The Cave Pilote’s historical significance is therefore shaped not only by its design, but also by its construction. The Cave Pilote conducted trials that helped secure the Fitou controlled designation of origin from INAO in 1948.
These are two different ways to explore wine: the Cave Pilote is about architecture and history, while Domaine Lérys offers a bookable tasting paired with local products.
Tastings and circular trails at Domaine Lérys
Domaine Lérys offers wine tastings year-round by reservation in a renovated tasting room. Also available year-round by reservation is a tasting package that pairs wines with local products bearing the Bienvenue à la Ferme label. This makes the connection with local products part of the offering alongside the wine.
Domaine Lérys also offers several bookable circular trails from 3 to 20 kilometres long. They can be explored on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. Two specific questions can help you choose: Which mode of transport suits your plans, and what distance would you like to cover?
Corbières orientales bird protection area
Villeneuve-Les-Corbières is part of the Corbières orientales Natura 2000 bird protection area. The area covers a total of 25,371.2 hectares and lies entirely within the Mediterranean biogeographical region. This figure refers to the entire protected area, not just the municipality. This puts the area’s natural setting in a regional context: unlike the trail to the Vierge Récaouffa, this designation identifies a larger protected area of which the municipality is part.
