Tourreilles offers specific points of interest for visitors interested in culture and walking: the high altar altarpiece in the church of Saint-Saturnin, historic memorial sites and trails with different focuses. The themes range from a single work of art to the heritage of several villages and a route through vineyards, garrigue and holm oak forests.

The high altar altarpiece of Saint-Saturnin

The altarpiece of the high altar is in the church of Saint-Saturnin. It is classified as a protected object; this protection was registered on 4 April 1996. The altarpiece is attributed to Jean-Jacques Melair and was restored in 2014. Its structure comprises four tiers, as well as two paintings and two sculptures. This describes both its multi-tiered construction and the combination of painting and sculpture. There are several perspectives from which to place it in art history: its design, its attribution and its restoration as a stage in the work's history.

A statue created by Vincent Perez was unveiled in Tourreilles' square in 1979. Unlike the altarpiece, whose structure and history are the focus, the statue is associated with a clearly dated event in the village's history.

Trails with different focuses

The historic path between Tourreilles and Magrie was restored as the Chemin du Petit Tambour. Information panels about the history of the Petit Tambour were installed along the first section in 2018. They were created by students in the Première class at Lycée Jacques Ruffié in Limoux, together with their history teacher, Monsieur Balussou. The year, the location of the first section and the people involved give this path its own historical significance.

Another historical episode concerns Pierre Bayle. He served as a volunteer drummer in the Republican armies. The thirteen-year-old child soldier fell in 1794. This story offers a different perspective on the past from the information about the altarpiece or the cemetery's design.

Memorial sites at the cemetery

At Tourreilles cemetery, the graves are arranged along a spiral path leading to the summit. The cemetery's Calvary cross, situated on the hill, was converted into a war memorial after the First World War. The cemetery also has a garden of remembrance.

The site can therefore also be understood through its different associations with remembrance: the spiral arrangement shapes its spatial description, while the conversion of the cross places its history in the period after the First World War. The garden of remembrance adds another feature of the cemetery to this picture.

Walking route through the landscape of the Cougaing Valley

The Circuit du Vignoble de la Vallée du Cougaing is a walking route where visitors can discover the heritage of five villages: Ajac, Castelreng, La Digne-d’Aval, La Digne-d’Amont and Tourreilles. The route passes through vineyards, garrigue and holm oak forests. Its focus is therefore not only on individual historical landmarks, but also on changing landscapes and the heritage of the villages named above.

A practical comparison can help you choose a focus: the Chemin du Petit Tambour is a historic path between Tourreilles and Magrie, while the Circuit is a walking route that connects the landscapes and heritage of five villages.

A regional annual event

Toques & Clochers traditionally takes place each spring in a village within the Limoux appellation. Tourreilles hosted the 2014 edition. This places the event in the context of a regional springtime tradition and connects a specific historic edition with the village, without suggesting that Tourreilles hosts it every year.

Whether your interests lie in sacred art, local history, remembrance or walking, Tourreilles offers distinct themes to consider when choosing a destination.
