The Aude département stretches from the foothills of the Pyrenees to Mediterranean lagoons. When choosing a holiday home, the specific subregion matters more than a general county name: a stay near Carcassonne raises different considerations from days on the coast or near Narbonne. Compare the exact location, amenities, and availability of each listing with your travel plans.
Explore history
The fortified old town of Carcassonne is an example of medieval military architecture, with its walls, castle, streets, and cathedral. It was added to the World Heritage List in 1997; its restoration by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc from 1853 to 1879 is a distinct part of its history. In Narbonne, Narbo Via presents more than 6,000 objects relating to the ancient city of Narbo Martius. The Horreum romain comprises underground Roman galleries; Amphoralis near Sallèles-d'Aude explores pottery production at an archaeological site. These are different destinations, each requiring its own visit planning.
Lagoons, trails, and activities
In the Narbonnaise Regional Natural Park, the landscape changes over short distances from Mediterranean lagoons to the Corbières. The Maison de la Narbonnaise offers trails and observation points in wetlands; a nature trail near Narbonne is 3.5 kilometres long. The Clape Massif has mountain biking trails with views of the sea and lagoons. Near Gruissan, the mountain biking area includes six routes covering a total of 110 kilometres, with widely varying difficulty levels. Kiteboarding and windsurfing are described on the windy, flat waters of the La Palme lagoon; check current conditions and rules. The Aude section of the Canal du Midi and Canal de la Robine is 36.6 kilometres long between Moussan and Port-la-Nouvelle and is a different travel theme from a day at the beach.
