Laure-Minervois can be explored through tangible traces of its architectural and rural history: a church of southern French Gothic architecture, a former main entrance, dry-stone huts and an archaeologically significant gallery site. There is also an easy, one-hour circular walk and a botanical trail through the garrigue. This lets you choose a clear focus for your stay: architecture and local history, rural construction along a route, or plants and landscape on a nature trail. The one-hour “Les capitelles – Chemin de la Guinette” circuit is particularly useful when planning your time.

Church, Gates and Historical Connections

The Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste has architecture characteristic of early 14th-century southern French Gothic. As a whole, it has been listed as a historic monument by decree of 7 June 2006. The references to its style and the decree describe different things: the early 14th century dates the architecture, while 2006 is the year it was listed.

The Tour du Portail-Neuf was Laure’s main entrance on the Carcassonne side and has been listed as a historic monument since 17 February 1926. Beside the gate are the points where the chains that once operated the drawbridge were attached. These traces make the entrance’s former mechanism tangible. The Tour de Mézolieux stood on the Cami Roumiu, a Roman road. This provides another historical landmark alongside the former entrance function of the Portail-Neuf.

Capitelles and Paths Through the Garrigue

The capitelles in Laure-Minervois are dry-stone huts and bear witness to rural history and the work of the farming population. On the easy “Les capitelles – Chemin de la Guinette” circular walk, the route is 3.5 kilometres long and the stated duration is one hour. The route starts and ends at Laure-Minervois Town Hall and reaches a restored capitelle near a small sinkhole. This connects a specific structure with its landscape setting.

Another natural highlight is the botanical trail at Domaine Fontanille Haut, which passes through the garrigue. The two options offer different points of focus: the circuit centres on capitelles, dry-stone construction and rural history; the trail draws attention to the garrigue and botanical themes. When choosing activities, you can therefore weigh up whether a clearly measured circular route or a focus on plants and landscape matters more to you.

The Saint-Eugène Gallery

The covered Saint-Eugène Gallery is 16 metres long and is listed as a historic monument. It lies at the top of a hill in the woods of Domaine de Russol in Laure-Minervois. Human remains belonging to about 300 people were discovered at the site. The gallery thus offers two distinct points of interest for a cultural stay: a structure with a specific length and an archaeological discovery. The figure is approximate; it does not indicate an exact number of people.
