Skyum brings together Skyumstenen on the beach, a village church that has been in use for 800 years, and traces of the Bronze Age near Skyum Bjerge. The Limfjord and the community recreation area at Skyum Østerstrand also offer practical starting points for planning. Helpful details include the approximate stretches of the route to the stone, directions along the beach, and the date of the bathing-water classification.
Skyumstenen: Rock and route to the beach
Skyumstenen is made of pegmatitic granite. It contains large, light flesh-colored potassium feldspar crystals, as well as plagioclase and quartz. The stone measures 4.2 m × 2.7 m, is 2 m high, and weighs up to 60 tonnes. Its measurements and mineral composition offer two different insights into this striking stone on the shore.
You can reach it on foot in two sections: From the car park at Bjergvej 6 in Skyum, the path leads about 500 m to the beach. From there, walk about another 500 m south along the shore to Skyumstenen. Altogether, that is approximately 1 km, split between the route to the beach and the stretch along the shore.
Limfjord, beach and recreation area
The Limfjord is a ten-minute walk from the center of Skyum. This refers to the route from the center to the fjord; to reach Skyumstenen, take the footpath from the car park at Bjergvej 6 via the beach. These two details help distinguish between the different destinations and starting points.
In 2021, the bathing water at Skyum Østerstrand was classified as “excellent”—the highest bathing-water quality a bathing site can achieve. As this classification refers to 2021, check the current classification before swimming. Skyum Østerstrand also has a community recreation area with a small playground, ball courts, a pétanque court, a bathing jetty, a fire pit and a public toilet. As facilities may change, check their condition before your visit.
From Skyum Østerstrand, you can walk north along the beach towards Skyum Bjerge or south towards Gudnæs Strand. Wellington boots are required for these walks at high tide. The choice of direction therefore connects a specific route decision with the high-tide condition.
Church and traces of the Bronze Age
Skyum Kirke in Thy has been in use for 800 years. Its exterior walls feature reliefs in the ashlar masonry: a face is depicted on the north side, and lions on the south side. The motifs can therefore be distinguished by their compass direction.
Skyum Bjerge is a hilly natural area with many burial mounds from the Early Bronze Age. Seventeen burial mounds have been preserved at the site “Gravhøje i Skyum Bjerge.” Two burial cists, an urn, a sword, a dagger, an arm ring and a bow brooch from one of the ploughed-over burial mounds at Skyum Bjerge are preserved at the National Museum. All these objects are made of bronze and date from the Early Bronze Age. In addition, a spiral ring made of thin gold wire from one of the burial cists has been preserved. This distinguishes the surviving burial mounds at the site from the objects preserved from a ploughed-over mound.
The artistically designed wooden playground is considered a kind of landmark of Skyum.
