A ridge more than two kilometres wide, stretching 38 kilometres from Dronninglund to Østervrå: Jyske Ås shapes the landscape around Brønderslev. Glacial processes formed the ridge during the last Ice Age. Fields, heathland, bogs and forests alternate across the landscape, which is also home to a rich variety of plant and animal life. Jyske Ås has signposted walking and cycling routes, as well as basic camping spots.

Forests, Bogs and Trails

Dronninglund Storskov covers 961 hectares. You can walk and cycle here; a signposted horse-riding route is available with a purchased riding pass. At Sømosen, there is a circular trail, along with tables and benches for a picnic break. Parking is also available. Ten signposted nature and interpretation trails are spread across the municipality. Route markers and facilities may change, so it is worth checking the route details before setting out.

Store Vildmose tells a different story of the landscape: this 450-hectare protected area is a remnant of a former raised bog, once considered the largest raised bog in Europe. Today, you can explore the area on foot or by bike; Vildmoseporten nature and visitor centre is also among the visitor facilities. Store Vildmose is also known for its diverse birdlife. A Naturstyrelsen observation tower on Manna Mosevej offers opportunities for birdwatching, which vary with the seasons.

Stories from the Region

The Museum for Forsyning og Bæredygtighed focuses on life in the Vildmosen bogs and on Jyske Ås. As a state-recognised cultural history museum, it brings together the natural environment and everyday history. Dorf Møllegård takes a different approach, with exhibitions on regional history that change over time. Its annual programme includes events such as talks, holiday activities for children and Hestedag. The events on offer vary throughout the year.

The museums in Hjallerup and Østvendsyssel also offer different historical perspectives. Hjallerup Mekaniske Museum displays tractors, cars, engines, motorcycles, agricultural machinery and other mechanical technology. Its themes range from the mechanisation of agriculture to the arrival of industry in Denmark in the 20th century. Egnssamlingen for Østvendsyssel traces the region’s history from the Stone Age to the mid-20th century. Høstdagen is an annual tradition there; dates vary from year to year. Psykiatrihistorisk Museum spans a broad period, from earliest prehistory through the Middle Ages and the Age of Enlightenment to the state psychiatric health service and more recent times.

Art, a Castle and Garden Experiences

At Voergaard Slot, a dungeon, the moat and the story of the bloodstain that cannot be washed away are among the special discoveries. Guided tours showcase works of art and share stories; their availability varies by season. During the Medieval Days, merchants, impressive craftsmanship and fire pits bring the entire grounds to life. Event dates change from year to year.

Dronninglund Kunstcenter is set in a natural area near Dronninglund Storskov. Changing art experiences, a gallery shop and a small café offer a different perspective on the region during your visit. Rhododendronparken is home to more than 10,000 plants in 130 varieties. The flowers bloom seasonally; every year, the round pavilion hosts events, including concerts and summer evenings with dancing. The park is also suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. As accessibility information may change, it is best to check before your visit. In Dronninglund Naturpark, Eventyrstien features sculptures and audio experiences accessed via QR codes. Junglestien in Dronninglund Naturpark offers children fun and challenging obstacles that are also appealing to the young at heart.

Harbour, Vineyard and Short Golf Rounds

Asaa harbour is now mainly used as a marina, and you can set off on fishing trips from there. Asaa Beach has held Blue Flag status for many years. Check its current certification status before your trip. At Nygårdsminde Vingård, winegrowing meets tasting: the vineyard has 2,500 organically certified vines across two hectares and offers tours of the vineyards followed by wine tasting. Booking and seasonal availability may change, so it is a good idea to enquire in advance if you plan to take a tour. For another activity, Nygårdsminde Parkgolf has three shorter courses, called loops, each with nine holes.
