Steep climbs, viewpoints, springs and streams shape the hilly heathland of Rebild Bakker. History offers another perspective: Museum Rebild explores emigration to America, while REGAN Vest focuses on the Cold War. Nature and culture are distinct, tangible discoveries to enjoy side by side.

Heath, Springs and Ancient Beeches

Rebild Bakker is a hilly heathland with steep slopes and beautiful viewpoints. Springs and streams are also part of its landscape. Store Blåkilde is a protected spring: view it from the bank. Its almost oval basin measures about twelve metres at its widest point and is four to five metres deep. Lille Blåkilde offers a different highlight: it carries about 90 litres of water per second and drains an area of ten to twelve square kilometres.

The trees, too, tell a story of time and diversity. Gnarled beeches grow in Troldeskoven; the oldest are more than 300 years old. More than 150 different tree and shrub species grow in Den Jyske Skovhave. Denmark’s first official dog forest was established there in 1970.

Hiking Trails for Different Levels

The 5.1-kilometre Røverruten is certified by the German Hiking Institute as a premium easy hiking route. Five large wooden figures, inspired by the forest’s history and legends, give it a distinctive theme. Rebild Bakker Ruten is a 10.8-kilometre hiking route. At 11.8 kilometres, Gravlev Ådal Ruten is slightly longer; it connects REGAN Vest, Rebildcentret and Thingbæk Kalkminer with Gravlev Sø and Rebild Bakker. This route is also certified as a premium hiking route. Its 76-metre-long Skillingbro Undervejsbro connects the area around REGAN Vest and the limestone mines with the landscape at Gravlev Sø and in Rebild Bakker.

Rold Skov has numerous marked hiking and running trails, as well as forests, lakes, springs and streams. For mountain bikers, the 17-kilometre 24-timers MTB-ruten, with its single-track sections, is another option. When there is enough snow, a two-part cross-country ski trail is also available: a 13-kilometre section between Skørping and Rebild, and a 2.3-kilometre training loop south of Skørping School. Sufficient snow is a prerequisite for this seasonal offering.

Traditions and Cultural History

Museum Rebild presents an exhibition about Danish emigration to America from 1850 to 1920. Its extensive folk music collection includes instruments, dances and songs. Gammeldans is a living tradition: dancing has taken place on Sunday afternoons since 1951, and continues every Sunday from 2 to 5 pm. Rebildfesten, meanwhile, has been a Danish-American tradition since 1912. Every year around 4 July, Danes, Americans, Danish-American guests and other visitors gather in Rebild Bakker for a day of speeches, music, community and cultural performances. The programme and access arrangements may vary from year to year.

The Cold War Museum REGAN Vest preserves a fully furnished bunker covering 5,500 square metres, with its original interior intact. The bunker itself can only be visited as part of a guided tour booked in advance. The path around the museum, however, is freely accessible and does not require a ticket. Check access arrangements and booking options before your visit. Rebildcentret has a 700-square-metre exhibition about the Cold War that is open to visitors. Other exhibitions explore the sculptors, limestone, the region’s springs and the Cold War, including the local REGAN Vest bunker. Thingbæk Kalkminer houses sculptures by Anders Bundgaard and Carl Johan Bonnesen. An accessible path leads from the car park to the reception building; paths connect the exhibition buildings and the limestone mines.

As an excursion in the surrounding area, Guldbæk Vingård offers guided tours, open vineyard visits and wine tastings. Visit formats and booking procedures may change; check in advance if you are planning a visit.

Water, Wildlife Watching and Getting Around

At Madum Sø, there is a marked circular trail around the lake. Access is from a car park overlooking the water; a footpath also leads to Langmosen. During the bird migration, ospreys may visit the lake and feed on pike and perch there. At Store Økssø, you’ll find two bathing beaches, a bathing jetty and a marked 1,570-metre swimming route. Bathing facilities and conditions may change seasonally. A 2.7-kilometre route by the lake is suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs and similar uses; check the condition of the paths before your trip.

Rebild Kanoudlejning starts canoe trips at Nybro near Rebild Bakker. Canoes are handed over there and route information is provided; parking is available nearby. Availability, water levels and operating arrangements may change, so it is worth checking before making plans. RebildPorten is the tourist information centre and visitor hub for Rebild Municipality. Digital information and maps of Rebild Bakker and Gravlev Ådal are available there to download.
