The harbor, sailing tradition and Hjarbæk Fjord offer different perspectives on the town. There are also traces of cultural history, two separately described waterfront locations and a Hærvejen stage starting in Hjarbæk. Depending on whether you are interested in history, nature or a route, a different part of your stay may take center stage.
Harbor and historical traces
Since the Middle Ages, Hjarbæk was an important loading place and port town belonging to Viborg Cathedral Chapter. This history can be connected to specific places: Hjarbæk Havn remains linked to the Sjægt sailing tradition, and visitors can enjoy the sunset from the pier.
Today, the harbor is home to around 30 Sjægt boats. Every August, the Hjarbæk Sjægtelaug holds the Sjægt Sailing World Championships there. Participants come from Denmark and abroad. The boats and the recurring competition offer different points of interest if you are curious about the town’s maritime side. For your travel planning, it is a good idea to check the event date for the relevant year.
Stejlepladsen is another of Hjarbæk’s distinctive cultural-historical sites: the facility is among the best-preserved of its kind in Denmark and is still used for its original purpose. Another testament to the town’s history is the building that now houses Hjarbæk Kro. It served as a customs house from 1847 to 1867. Hjarbæk Kro has a restaurant with seating for 70 people and a terrace overlooking the fjord. As dining options may change, it is best to check before your visit.
Fjord, seasons and waterfront
The best time to visit depends on which theme you want to focus on. The Sjægt Sailing World Championships take place every August. In autumn and winter, many thousands of waterbirds rest at Hjarbæk Fjord. The fjord is protected as a resting, feeding and breeding area for waterbirds. The sailing event and the birds’ seasonal stopover thus appeal to different seasonal interests.
Hjarbæk Havn’s pier is also a distinct place to visit for a view of the fjord: visitors can enjoy the sunset from there. If you are interested in spending time by the water, there are also two beach descriptions to consider separately. Hjarbæk Strand is a very shallow bathing spot. The 15-meter-wide shore consists of sand and grass; the bottom is sandy with small stones.
Hjarbæk Strandpark, by contrast, is described as having a beach about 10 meters wide and a sand-covered bottom. The information refers to places with different names, so they should not be combined into a single description of the waterfront. This lets you distinguish between the described shallow bathing spot and the beach park when planning, without mixing up their respective features.
A route starting in Hjarbæk
If you are also considering Hjarbæk as a starting point for a route, the Hærvejen stage Hjarbæk–Viborg begins here. It follows the fjord toward Viborg. The stage’s starting point and direction are both specified, making it a different option from a stay focused mainly on the harbor, sailing or nature along the fjord.
