From Stoholm, you can reach the centres of Viborg and Skive by train in about ten minutes each. At the same time, Stoholm itself offers culture and various opportunities for outdoor pursuits; nearby, you’ll also find hiking trails and the landscape around Birkesø and Jordbro Ådal. Whether you want your trip to focus more on a longer hike, architecture or a festival, you can plan around these different options.
Hiking and outdoor activities
The Kalk Kaminoen is a 30-kilometre hiking trail between Stoholm and Skelhøje. Part of it follows the “Sporet ved Smollerup Kirke” trail. A shorter route starts nearby at the Birkesø car park: this hiking trail is 2.5 kilometres long in total. The different trail lengths give you a practical guide to how much hiking you’d like to include in your stay.
For outdoor exercise in town, Rute 786 Stoholm Motionsrute is a signposted exercise route. There’s a mountain bike and skills trail at Stoholm Fritids- og Kulturcenter. Stoholm SFO has created an orienteering course in Børneskoven. The Blomsterbakken playground has a climbing and play tower with a slide and climbing net.
Nature near Birkesø
The area around Stoholm includes Birkesø and Jordbro Ådal, with a lake, plantations, heathland and a river valley. Birkesø is a very nutrient-poor lake and is also known as a lobelia lake. The Birkesø area is part of EU Habitat Site H 39. There’s a sandy beach and public bathing area at the north end of the lake. When you visit, you can explore different aspects of the landscape: the lake area, the other natural habitats and the designated bathing spot on the lakeshore.
Church architecture and exhibition
Stoholm Kirke was built between 1969 and 1971 and inaugurated on 7 March 1971. It is a typical example of modernist church architecture from the second half of the 20th century. Inside, light entering through a large eastern gable window shapes the space. The construction dates, architectural style and this specific design feature offer different ways to explore the church.
The Forårsudstillingen is open to everyone, including first-time exhibitors and amateur artists. If you’d like to include the exhibition in your travel plans, check the event dates in advance.
Festivals and local history
Anlægget Park is the venue for the annual Stoholm Festuge. The park is accessible from both Anlægsgade and Stadionvej, where parking is also available. Sankt Hansbål is a long-standing tradition in Stoholm. It includes a communal meal, a speech by the bonfire and damper baked on the lawn in front of Stoholm Fritids- og Kulturcenter. If you’re planning your trip around one of these events, check the dates in advance.
The town’s history is also linked to the railway: when the railway line between Viborg and Skive opened in 1864, the station in Feldingbjerg Municipality was named Stoholm. For travel today, a practical guide is that the centres of Viborg and Skive are each about ten minutes away from Stoholm by train. If you’re planning to use the connection, check the timetable for your travel dates.
