Lake and landscape history

Rødding Sø links a recent change to the lake with a much older landscape history. The lake was restored in 2004, after having been drained for 100 years. The valley containing Rødding Sø was formed during the last Ice Age, around 15,000 years ago. The two dates help distinguish between the developments: the restoration concerns the lake, while the Ice Age shaped the valley. The lake covers 21 hectares and is up to 2.5 metres deep. Many birds can be found in the surrounding area; their presence varies with the seasons.

At the bathing area by Rødding Sø, there is a grassy recreational area with a fire pit and barbecue, tables and benches, a toilet and a zip line. The facilities bring together a range of features: the lawn and seating offer space to relax, while the fire pit and barbecue, toilet and zip line add to the area. Alongside the landscape and the lake’s history, the recreational facilities are also part of what the area has to offer.

Sections of the Danish Monastery Route

Two sections of the Danish Monastery Route can be compared when planning your walk. One 1.9-kilometre section runs from Batum to Rødding Church. The 2.7-kilometre section from the church to Sødal Skov passes through hilly terrain. At 2.7 kilometres, the route to the forest is 0.8 kilometres longer than the section from Batum to the church; the destinations described also differ. The hilly terrain is an additional feature of the longer section. Conditions on the route may change, so it is worth checking the latest information before setting out.

Church and community life

Rødding Church is the oldest building in Rødding: a more than 800-year-old Romanesque village church in the centre of the town. Its age and Romanesque style provide a tangible architectural reference point for the town’s history. If you would like to explore architecture as well as landscapes and walking routes, the church is one of Rødding’s defining landmarks.

Local clubs follow different schedules. Rødding og Omegns Folkedanserforening meets to dance on Monday evenings from 7:30 to 10:00 p.m., with a half-hour coffee break and communal singing. Its season runs from mid-September to around the beginning of April. The women’s choir Sødal Happy Singers meets every Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Rødding Church. Its varied repertoire consists mainly of gospel and pop and may evolve over time. No prior experience or audition is required to join Sødal Happy Singers; participation requirements may change. The dance club operates seasonally, while the choir meets weekly on Tuesdays. If a club evening is relevant to your plans, check the current times and participation requirements in advance.
