More than 12,000 bats from five species spend the winter in the Mønsted-Daugbjerg limestone mines. The area is one of Europe's most important bat hibernation sites. Visitors can explore several kilometres of open mine passages in the limestone mines at Mønsted and Daugbjerg. The mines reveal a special side of nature in Viborg Municipality: it can also be discovered underground.

Landscapes and trails

Around Hald Sø, the surrounding area is designated a national geological area of interest and is of international importance. Viborg Nature Park consists of several natural areas around Viborg, not one continuous park. The municipality also offers nature experiences along fjords, lakes and rivers, as well as in heathland, forests and parks. There is also plenty of choice for swimming: 14 bathing spots are located by lakes and the fjord.

Those who want to explore the landscape on foot or by bike can choose from routes with different highlights. The scenic Himmerlandsstien runs between Viborg and Hvam. Along the route, there are rest areas, fire pits and fire shelters. Overnight stays in shelters or on tent pitches are possible in some places; drinking water and toilets are available occasionally.

The Kjællinghøl route is a relaxing circular trail between Bjerringbro and Kjællinghøl that crosses the Kjællinghøl Bridge. Trækstien is an original hiking trail along the Gudenå, offering a variety of nature experiences. Near Birkesø, a marked 2.5-kilometre hiking route passes through a landscape of lake and heathland, with views of Jordbro Ådal along the way. A sandy beach and a public bathing spot lie at the northern end of Birkesø.

Route lengths can also be compared precisely: the Arnbjerg route is 4.9 kilometres long and can be explored on foot or by bike. It runs between Søndersø and the new Arnbjerg district. Birkesø and Arnbjerg thus offer two routes with stated distances, whose landscapes and endpoints provide different reference points for planning a trip.

Archaeology, history and art

At Hvolris Iron Age Village, archaeological excavations are located right beside a reconstructed Iron Age village. During the summer and autumn school holidays, visitors can enjoy immersive Iron Age experiences: families experience a way of life inspired by the Iron Age in the village. The holiday periods are part of the experience and help visitors plan their trip around its theme.

De fem Halder tells 800 years of history and power, from the Middle Ages through the Reformation and into modern times. The site offers walks through a landscape of restored ruins, a Baroque garden, a family treasure hunt, an exhibition and a historic playground. Here, historical insights meet different ways to explore the grounds.

In Viborg, the story continues in the city centre: Viborg Cathedral was originally built in the Romanesque style in the 12th to 13th centuries. Its crypt is the oldest part of the church and dates back almost 900 years. The cathedral is closed to visitors during church services; check the latest visitor information when planning your visit.

The Domkirkekvarteret can be explored on a self-guided historical route, accessible via Storyhunt in a browser or the app. Ten stops offer insights into the district's 1,000-year history. For a different perspective on art, the Skovgaard Museum features Danish Golden Age art and modern contemporary art, particularly works by Joakim Skovgaard and his family. The museum is about a ten-minute walk from Viborg station via the pedestrianised shopping street.

Viborg Kunsthal presents changing exhibitions by Danish and international visual artists. It also hosts artist talks, lectures, concerts and workshops. Energimuseet focuses on energy, future energy solutions and the green transition; it is Denmark's experience and learning centre for these subjects.

Getting around and local experiences

There are direct train connections from Viborg to Aarhus, Skive and Struer. The yellow city buses serve Viborg and the surrounding area; their route numbers are single digits, such as route 1. As connections and timetables can change, it's worth checking the latest times before setting off.

Local beer experiences are also part of what's on offer. At Viborg Bryghus, you can enjoy beer tapas and try a selection of beers from Viborg. On the Viborg Beer Walk, you visit six stops at breweries, cafés, restaurants and pubs, sampling different beers along the way. Participating venues and terms may change, so check the latest information in advance.
