Ublo lies in the hills of the Vizovická vrchovina; the surrounding area includes forests, meadows and pastures. Two themes can guide your trip: hikes through this hilly landscape and the history of the unfinished Baťa railway. The UBlanka Tunnel is a concrete remnant of this railway.

Hikes with different route characteristics

A hiking route from Vizovice via Ublo is about 14 km long. There is a steeper climb at Suchý vrch; after that, the trail runs mostly through the forest along the contours. The length and terrain profile give you different points of reference when planning a hike: in addition to the approximate distance, the climb and the subsequent forest section are also described.

From Vartovna, a route follows green- and yellow-marked hiking trails towards Ublo and the U Hruška viewpoint. A yellow-marked hiking trail also passes through the cadastral area of Ublo. The route information offers different ways to find your bearings: for the trail from Vizovice, the approximate length and terrain profile are specific planning details; from Vartovna, the markings and the connection to U Hruška provide orientation.

The return leg of the “Kapka mezi dvěma zámky” route is also a distinct waypoint to consider when planning: in Ublo, you cross the railway formation of the unfinished railway again and climb via Jasenná to Vartovna.

The Baťa railway and the UBlanka Tunnel

Construction work on the Vizovice–Ublo section of the Baťa railway began in July 1934. A hiking route along the unfinished railway leads to Ublo, where the UBlanka Tunnel is planned as the first stop. On the trail above the Baťa railway line, the route in Ublo passes over the tunnel and then becomes a grassy railway embankment again. The tunnel and embankment are therefore distinctive features of this hike.

This gives you different priorities to consider when choosing a route: the hike from Vizovice is characterised by its approximate length, a steeper climb and forest sections. By contrast, the routes associated with the Baťa railway focus on the railway formation and tunnel. Conditions can change seasonally; check the current route description before setting out.

Local history and building traditions

The first written record of the settlement of Ublo dates from 1450 and documents the local bailiff’s estate. The bell in Ublo’s bell tower bears the year 1784. A monument to the fallen of the First World War stands in the centre of the village. These dates and places offer different perspectives: the early record points to the history of the settlement, while the bell and monument are later historical memorials.

The surviving wooden houses in Ublo are part of the region’s folk architecture. The Ubelské divadlo continues the local tradition of amateur theatre. A bronze socketed axe from the Valušné field in Ublo or its immediate vicinity is kept at the museum in Olomouc. Together with the monument and bell tower, the local architecture offers a different perspective on Ublo from the hiking trails and traces of the railway.

Plan your stay

When looking for a holiday apartment in Ublo, you can first consider what you want to focus on during your stay: a hike with a described climb and forest section, trails connected with Vartovna, or local history and the Baťa railway. The route information helps you distinguish between these interests, without having to combine every theme into a single hike.
