Drnovice U Valašských Klobouk brings together a modern Catholic branch church, the memorial site at Ploština and several outdoor destinations. Cultural highlights include the Church of Saint Agnes of Bohemia, a memorial site and a permanent exhibition. Viewpoints, hiking trails and cycling routes complete the picture. You can choose what to explore based on history, landscape or a mix of both.
Church and Remembrance
The Church of Saint Agnes of Bohemia in Drnovice is a modern Catholic branch church. It was built in 1990 and consecrated on 21 July 1991. The thematic contrast is between the more recent history of the church in Drnovice and the commemoration of the victims of the Second World War and the occupation in Ploština.
Until 1945, Ploština was a Pasekář settlement within the cadastral area of the municipality of Drnovice, three kilometres north of the village. In the 1970s, Ploština was declared a National Cultural Monument. The memorial site commemorates victims of the Second World War and the occupation from the Zlín District; it was established in 1975 and extensively reconstructed in 2008.
Plaques bearing the names of all the murdered Pasekář settlers are attached to the pillars of the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows (“Panny Marie Bolestné”) in Ploština. The chapel was consecrated. At the memorial site, the permanent exhibition “Pasekářská osada Ploština” presents Pasekář life and Pasekář colonisation as a characteristic settlement phenomenon of Wallachia. The plaques name the people, while the exhibition focuses on the settlement phenomenon.
Viewpoints and Trails
Drnovická vyhlídka is a tourist viewpoint and rest area on a hill between Drnovice and the settlement of Ploština. It was built in 2023. The outdoor exhibition there is accessible year-round and is wheelchair accessible. If you would like to visit, check access to the exhibition in advance.
Another viewpoint is Rozhledna Drnovice, an eight-metre-high wooden observation tower. It is freely accessible; check access before your visit. For a cycling trip to Rozhledna Drnovice, a tour profile published in 2024 gives a distance of 1.8 kilometres and an elevation gain of 100 metres. The profile lists MTB, cross-country and road bikes. Check current trail conditions before setting off.
Several hiking and cycling routes lead from Drnovice through the Vizovické vrchy and Bílé Karpaty nature parks. The Vařákovy paseky educational trail has 15 marked stops. From Drnovice, it can be reached via Osada Ploština, Pod Sveradov and the Bařinka trail junction; it is about twelve kilometres from Drnovice. As the route may change, check the current markings before setting off.
Mount Klášťov lies northwest of Drnovice. It is part of the Vizovické vrchy Nature Park and has remains of an extensive fortified settlement. While Ploština commemorates victims of the Second World War and the occupation, the settlement remains at Klášťov offer another historical point of reference in the landscape.
