The Baroque statue of Saint John the Baptist is a striking feature of Dobrkovice’s local history: it dates from 1744 and stands on a bare ridge above the village, at a crossroads. There are also specific points of interest on the village square: a wooden bell tower dating from 1832 houses a bell from 1935. Visitors who want to focus on local buildings and history during their stay will find several distinct points of reference in Dobrkovice, both in time and place.

Valley, stream and location

Dobrkovice lies at an elevation of 276 metres in a deep valley of the Vizovické vrchy. The Holomňa flows through the centre; it is a tributary of the Olšava. The valley and stream describe two different aspects of the location: the Vizovické vrchy define the wider landscape, while the Holomňa flows directly through Dobrkovice. At the same time, the village has retained its agricultural character. Both the valley and a watercourse running through the centre are therefore key features for finding your way around. The Chlupáč forest covered a total of 120 hectares within Dobrkovice’s cadastral area.

Dobrkovice lies one kilometre east of the main road that runs from Uherský Brod via Velký Ořechov to Zlín. The nearest railway station is in Biskupice. These are two distinct points of reference for the village’s location: a named road connection and the site of the nearest railway station.

The village square

On the village square, the Chapel of Our Lady, Help of Christians, stands beside a bridge over the Holomňa. Here, the stream is a specific point of reference alongside the named building. The wooden bell tower also stands on the village square. It dates from 1832 and houses a bell from 1935. The two years refer to different features: 1832 to the bell tower, 1935 to the bell. This makes it possible to distinguish the building from its fittings in time.

History in specific places

The oldest documented historical name for Dobrkovice is recorded in 1360. The statue of Saint John the Baptist was added in 1744 and has been protected as a cultural monument since May 1958. These dates connect an early trace of the village’s name with a specific building and its later protection.

The memorial to those who fell in the First World War was erected in 1921. It stands above a bend near the municipal office building. A new cross was consecrated in 1947 in front of house No. 27, on the occasion of the first Mass of Vojtěch Fuglíks, who was from Dobrkovice. The two memorials commemorate different events: the monument remembers those who fell in the First World War, while the cross is associated with Fuglíks’s first Mass. Together with the statue and the buildings on the village square, they provide several specific ways to explore Dobrkovice’s local history in chronological and spatial order.
