Francova Lhota offers two specific trip-planning highlights: nature experiences in the Pulčín-Hradisko National Nature Reserve and the annual Fašank festival. Access to the colorful ice waterfalls is marked seasonally, while the procession takes place on the weekend before Ash Wednesday. If you are deciding when to travel and what to focus on, these different dates provide clear guidance.
Rock Formations, Memorial Tree and Observation Tower
The Pulčín-Hradisko National Nature Reserve is a protected area established to preserve significant rock formations and forests with a naturally composed mix of species. The Pulčín Rocks consist of five groups of rock formations. Both the rocky landscape and the preservation of the forest’s natural composition are therefore important aspects of the protected area.
The Kobzova lime tree is a memorial tree. It is 26 meters tall and has a trunk circumference of 760 centimeters. The observation tower on Čubův kopec is made of wood, has four levels and is 16 meters tall; it is open to the public. With a difference in height of ten meters, you can compare the tree and tower’s measurements directly. The rock formation Trtol also offers a view of the valley.
Marked Trails and Hiking Stages
A seasonally marked trail leads from the information center in Pulčín to the colorful ice waterfalls in the Pulčín-Hradisko National Nature Reserve. Check the conditions for this trail before taking a winter trip. Entry to the nature reserve is prohibited by law outside marked hiking trails. When planning your visit, therefore, be sure to take into account both the seasonal trail markings and the requirement to stay on marked paths.
A nature trail runs through Francova Lhota and along the ridge of the Javorníky Mountains. Francova Lhota is also an excellent starting point for hiking stages along this ridge and toward the White Carpathians. The nature trail provides a specific route through the village and over the ridge, while the hiking stages offer a broader direction for planning your tours.
Fašank and St. Nicholas Processions Throughout the Year
Traditional Fašank processions take place in Francova Lhota every year on the weekend before Ash Wednesday. The procession lasts two days, passes through the municipality and ends at the local cultural center with the symbolic burial of the double bass. Both the duration and the conclusion of the tradition are clearly defined. If you are planning a trip specifically for this occasion, check the exact event dates for the year in question.
In December, processions by a Mikuláš group—a St. Nicholas group—take place in Francova Lhota. These processions are especially typical of southern Wallachia. Fašank and the St. Nicholas processions therefore offer different seasonal occasions: one is tied to the weekend before Ash Wednesday, while the others take place in December.
